Byrd shuts down Miracle

CLEARWATER, F.L. (July 24, 2008) - Four early runs coupled with five extra base hits helped the Clearwater Threshers to a 4-3 win over the Fort Myers Miracle on Thursday night at Bright House Field. Thresher starter Darren Byrd, winless in 2008 with an earned run average just under seven, tossed 8.1 innings in his and Clearwater's first win over the Miracle this season.

All four Thresher runs would be scored with two outs as Michael Taylor, Tuffy Gosewisch and Gary Cates combined on a 5-for-8 night at the plate, hitting in the bottom of the order. After Taylor's double kept the second inning alive, a two-run shot to left by Gosewisch would give the Threshers a two-run lead.

Two innings later, Taylor would keep the fourth frame going receiving the only walk of the night by Miracle starter Deolis Guerra. Gosewisch followed with his third RBI of the night on a double down the left-field line, before scoring himself on Cates' RBI double to the gap in left-center.

Scoreless through eight innings, the Miracle offense would finally arrive in the ninth only to have the tying-run left on base to end the contest. Danny Berg led off with a single to right and immediately scored on Steve Singleton's double to right-center, putting the Miracle on the board at 4-1.

After Edward Ovalle struck out, Singleton would race home on Wilson Ramos' double to right, slicing the deficit down to two, while bringing the tying run to the plate. Garrett Olson would slap a single into center, scoring Ramos for a 4-3 contest, before two Clearwater pitching changes, a strikeout by Eli Tintor and fielder's choice by Danny Santiestiban ended the game.

Game two of in Clearwater will take place Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle will send RHP Oswaldo Sosa (2-0, 3.57) to the Bright House Field mound opposite first-round draft pick from a year ago, LHP Joe Savery (5-8, 3.85). Catch Friday's action from Clearwater on WMYR AM-1410 and WCNZ AM-1660 beginning at 6:45 p.m.
