Buzzards Slip in Shootout

EL PASO, Texas – This game had everything.

The Buzzards played an exciting game, but lost a heartbreaker to the Amarillo Gorillas 5-4 in a shootout. The Buzzards pick up a point in the standings and move to 6-14-2 overall. BuzzardsÂ’ defenseman Jason Tessier scored a power play goal and two assists, center Joe Gray had a goal and an assist and right winger Derrell Upton added two assists in the overtime loss.

In the game, there was a shootout, three fights, five redirection goals and numerous checks along the boards. The announced crowd of 2,221 was on edge the entire evening with great hockey, big hits and fantastic goal scoring.

The game started with a fight two seconds into the game when BuzzardsÂ’ left winger Scott Mahar knocked out Gorillas forward Neil Posillico. The Buzzards then got on the board with a power play goal by gritty right winger Josh Tymchak, assisted by Tessier and Gray at 9:47. The Gorillas countered with goals by Derrick Hahn and Dorian Anneck. The Buzzards were out shot in the period 11-8, but were perfect on the power play, going one-for-one.

In the second period, the Buzzards regained the momentum with a wraparound goal by BuzzardsÂ’ left winger Russ Guzior at 1:09 to open the scoring. BuzzardsÂ’ wingers Troy Linna and Upton assisted GuziorÂ’s goal. Then Tessier connected on the power play for the Buzzards to notch is fifth goal of the season, assisted by Upton and Linna at 6:15. The Gorillas countered on the special teams with a power play goal by Henry Kuster at 15:38. GorillasÂ’ forward Ben Maidment and defenseman Brandon Carper assisted KusterÂ’s goal.

The third period started off with the Buzzards in the lead again with a goal scored by Gray at 4:29 in the third period. Tessier and BuzzardsÂ’ center Jeff Scharf assisted GrayÂ’s goal. Amarillo countered with a goal by Maidment at 6:54.

The win improves the Gorillas to 11-8-0 overall, and 6-2-0 on the road. The overtime loss puts the BuzzardsÂ’ record at 4-8-1 at home. On special teams, the Buzzards went 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Gorillas were 2 for 4.

Before the game, the Buzzards announced the signing of forward Markus Forsberg and the release of defenseman Kenny Moore.

The BuzzardsÂ’ next game will be at 7 p.m.., Friday, in the Ector County Coliseum against the Odessa Jackalopes. The Buzzards retain the fourth place spot, nine points in back of New Mexico for third place.
