Buzzards Add Dynamic Center to Roster

EL PASO, Texas â The El Paso Buzzards announced today the signing of center Jeff Scharf (pronounced SCARF) for the 2002-2003 season. Scharf, 6'0" and 190 lbs., comes to the Buzzards with much experience having played in the East Coast Hockey League, the International Hockey League and the United Hockey League in his five-year professional career.
Scharf, 25, split the 2001-2002 season between the ECHL (Charlotte Checkers, Arkansas RiverBlades, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies) and the UHL (Kalamazoo Wings) scoring 32 points (13-19-32) in 58 games. The Sudbury, Ontario native has racked up 198 points (73-125-198) in 268 professional games and has added 212 penalty minutes.
"Jeff Scharf has played at a high level of professional hockey having been in the ECHL the majority of his career," said Buzzards' head coach and director of hockey operations Craig Coxe. "We are fortunate to have a player like Jeff to help the younger players, especially in developing their skills on the ice. He will be one of the leaders on my team because he is a veteran player who has the potential to get a lot of points for our club and to win games."
Buzzards' general manager Robbie Nichols is equally thrilled with Coach Coxe's choice saying, "Jeff Scharf will certainly add leadership and maturity to our team. Coach Coxe really has a knack for searching out and finding the right pieces of the puzzle that will make our team President's Cup contenders this season."
The signing of Scharf brings the Buzzards' 2002-2003 roster to fourteen players. Scarf joins goalies Nathan Grobins and Matt Carmichael, forwards Tom McMonagle, Joe Gray, Josh Tymchak, Jeremy Vokes, Derek Reynolds, and Derrell Upton as well as defensemen Mike Zeibaq, Aaron Boh, Rhett Dudley, Jason Tessier and Trevor Folk.
The El Paso Buzzards play in the professional Central Hockey League. The team is entering their seventh season of play in El Paso with a home opener on Saturday, October 26th as they take on the San Angelo Saints.
