WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce the signing of middle infielder Sam Bumpers. The second-year professional was the Colorado Rockies' 22nd round selection in the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft.

"Bumpers is what you want in a shortstop. He's a proven winner and leader" said Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He's also has a quality that's often overlooked, he's proven he can keep himself healthy and in the lineup everyday year in and year out. His offensive ability is above average for a middle infielder at the pro level and I expect him to be a tough out in our league.

After being drafted by Colorado, Bumpers spent the summer of 2014 with the Rockies' SS-A affiliate, the Tri-City (WA) Dust Devils of the Northwest League. Playing mostly at second base, he had a .974 fielding percentage in 45 games. At the plate, he batted .258 with 23 RBI and eight stolen bases.

The 22-year old played collegiately at Lamar (TX) University his junior and senior season. As a senior in 2014, he led the Cardinals offensively batting .361, six homers and 37 RBI. He was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Year and to the All-Southland Conference first team.

In 2013, his junior season, he was named to the All-Southland Conference second team and the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year. He hit .339 with a team-best 19 doubles that season.

He was named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament team both seasons.

Before Lamar, Bumpers played two seasons at Iowa Western Community College. He was a member of the 2012 JUCO World Series Champions. The native of Bourbonnais, IL is the son of Brian and Selena. In his spare time he enjoys hanging out by the pool.

The 10th season of Beach Bums baseball begins Friday May 15 at Evansville at 6:35pm with the home opener scheduled for Friday May 22nd vs. Windy City at 7:05pm.

All games will be broadcast live on 98.1 The Bear.
