Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - Three different Vermont batters provided two hits apiece as the Lake Monsters sent the Hudson Valley Renegades to their third consecutive loss, 5-4 Thursday night from Centennial Field.

It was Hudson Valley who started fast by scoring two runs in the first inning. With two out and nobody on, a single, double and hit batsman loaded the bases before a passed ball from Vermont catcher Jose Rivas allowed Hudson Valley counterpart Chris Betts to score from third. Two batters later, Lake Monsters starting pitcher Jhenderson Hurtado uncorked a bases-loaded wild pitch to bring in Renegades first baseman Jacson McGowan to put Hudson Valley in front 2-0.

Vermont got a run back in the second as a bases-loaded walk from Hudson Valley starting pitcher Blake Pflughaupt cut the Renegades' lead to one. In the third, the Lake Monsters tied things up. First-baseman Alfonso Rivas doubled to left, went to third on a passed ball, then scored on a one-out RBI single to left by second-baseman Jonah Bride.

The Lake Monsters added two more runs in the fifth to tie things up. With one out, Bride doubled to left then came in to score as a throwing error to first from Renegades' third-baseman Adrian Rondon, off the bat of shortstop Jeremy Eierman, went down the rightfield line for a three-base error. Eierman scored when the next hitter, J.J. Schwartz, roped a single to right to put Vermont ahead 4-2.

The Renegades got a run back in the seventh, thanks again to a rally that started with two out and no one on. McGowan drew a walk, then sprinted for home on a resounding double to left by designated hitter Erik Ostberg. However, the Lake Monsters responded in the bottom-half on a two-out, solo-homer down the rightfield line off the bat of Eierman. For Jeremy, it was his fifth homerun of the year and his second off of Hudson Valley.

In the eighth, the Renegades made one last push, but could only score one run. With one out, rightfielder Jake Stone walked, went to third on a single to right from centerfielder Michael Smith, then scored on a sac fly to center from second-baseman Tyler Frank to make the score 5-4. With two out, Smith stole second base but was stranded when leftfielder Bryce Brown grounded to third.

In the ninth, Hudson Valley got a runner to second with one out. However, Ostberg flew out to center and shortstop Ford Proctor grounded out to second to end the ballgame.

Getting the win for Vermont in relief was Chris Kohler (2-2) who allowed an earned run on three hits over three frames. The loss fell to Pflughaupt (2-2) who allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 4.1 innings. The southpaw also walked and struck out four.

The Renegades had nine hits in the game and were paced by Ostberg who went 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI. McGowan chipped in with two more hits, including a double and two runs scored.

The Lake Monsters finished with eight hits as Bride, Eierman, and Schwartz, Vermont's 4-5-6 hitters, had two hits each. Bride doubled, scored a run, and drove in another, Eierman scored three times and drove in a run on his dinger. Schwartz singled twice, and drove in a run himself.

The Renegades face the Lake Monsters in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05. Right-hander Miller Hogan (2-0, 4.50 ERA) will take the hill for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Guz Varland (0-1, 1.32 ERA) of Vermont.

Hudson Valley returns home on Sunday, August 5 when they open a three-game series and homestand against the Brooklyn Cyclones. First-pitch is slated for 5:05. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
