BURLINGTON, VT - Vermont leftfielder Payton Squier went 5-6 as the Lake Monsters pounded out 17 hits en route to a resounding 15-5 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades Friday night at Centennial Field. The Renegades have now lost a season-high four games in a row. The 10-run margin was the most lopsided loss of the season for Hudson Valley as well.
The Lake Monsters took control of the game early by plating the first six runs of the game. In the third, a triple to center from Joseph Pena scored Aaron Arruda from first to put the Lake Monsters on the board. Pena came in when the next batter, Squier, laid down an RBI bunt single to first to put Vermont ahead 2-0. Later in the inning, Pena was hit by a pitch, stole second, then came around on an RBI double to center from Squier to give the Lake Monsters a 5-0 lead. Shortstop Jeremy Eierman laced a one-out triple to center with one out in the fifth, before scoring on a wild pitch from Renegades relief pitcher Joe Ryan to give Vermont a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Hudson Valley tried to claw back into the game with two runs in the sixth on a solo homer to right by centerfielder Tanner Dodson (2) to make the score 6-1. Later in the inning, designated hitter Erik Ostberg went to third on a fielding and throwing error from Vermont catcher J.J. Schwartz with one away, before coming in on a sac fly to right from first-baseman Jacson McGowan to pull the Renegades to within four. However, the Lake Monsters responded immediately in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run round-tripper to center from rightfielder Aaron Arruda to up the Vermont lead to 8-2.
The Renegades tried to make a game of it by scoring the next three runs. In the seventh, two singles and a passed ball put runners at second and third with no one out before rightfielder Bryce Brown drove in a run on a groundout to short, while the other runner moved to third. The next hitter, second baseman Justin Bridgman, followed with a sac fly to center. In the eighth, Ostberg scalded a one-out triple to right, then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by McGowan to bring Hudson Valley to within 8-5.

Later in the inning, two runs came in on a throwing error from Bridgman, while Vermont rightfielder Nick Osborne drove in a run with an RBI single. The final run of the inning came on a single from Pena to up the count to 15-5. In all, 12 men came to the plate for the Lake Monsters.
Getting the win for Vermont was reliever Clark Cota (1-1) who allowed two runs on two hits over two innings. The loss fell to Hudson Valley starting pitcher Miller Hogan (2-1) who allowed two earned runs on five hits in three innings, however relievers Joe Ryan and Justin Montgomery combined to give up 13 runs on 11 hits in only 4.2 innings of work. Though he did not figure in the decision, Lake Monsters starting pitcher Gus Varland was strong after tossing four scoreless frames on four hits with four strikeouts.
