BULLS USE LONG BALL TO BEAT YANKEES, 4-2
(Moosic, PA) Elliot Johnson homered from both sides of the plate, the last breaking a 2-2 tie in the eighth, as Durham beat Scranton 4-2 on Monday night.
Johnson's homer to left off rehabbing MLB lefty Damoso Marte (0-1) was a quick answer after Scranton had tied the game with a two-run seventh. Matt Joyce then followed two batters later with a long homer to right, his 12th, for a 4-2 advantage.
Andy Sonnanstine (3-0) followed with a scoreless eighth, allowing just an infield hit. Sonnanstine went eight innings, his longest outing since coming down from Tampa Bay. He gave up eight hits, but didn't walk a batter, and struck out five. Aside from the seventh inning, in only one other inning did he allow another runner to advance past first base. Jason Childers followed up with a 10-pitch ninth for his fourth save in five days.
Durham had taken a 2-0 lead against Josh Towers before Scranton tied it in the seventh. John Jaso followed a second-inning single and a Rhyne Hughes double with an RBI groundout. In the third, Johnson homered from the left side for a 2-0 advantage.
Durham collected 10 hits, three from Johnson, and two from Joyce.
Durham (59-45) has won five of six, taking the first of four against the defending Governors' Cup champs in battle of division leaders. Game two of four against Scranton (56-44) is at 7:05 on Wednesday. Coverage on 99.9 the Fan ESPN Radio begins at 6:55.
