Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Behind Mitch Talbot's 5.0 innings of scoreless, three-hit ball, the Durham Bulls clinched the Season Opener, 2-1 over Norfolk on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Talbot picked up his first win of the season as he and the five other Bulls pitchers held the Tides to six hits, seven strikeouts and one run, a solo shot from Nolan Reimold to left field off Julio DePaula in the seventh.
Norfolk's one run would not be enough as the Bulls offense produced two in the third. The first run of the 2009 season came with the bases loaded and one out. Justin Ruggiano reached on a fielder's error scoring John Jaso from third. The very next at-bat, Chris Richard grounded into a force out scoring Chris Nowak, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
With the game at 2-1, Norfolk rallied back in the ninth after Oscar Salazar led off the inning with a triple off of Bulls closer Dale Thayer. Thayer then proceeded to retire the next three batters, picking up his first save of the season and securing the Bulls first win of 2009.
Durham looks to make it two-in a row Friday night as the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball, David Price, USA Today's Minor League Player of the Year in 2008, is scheduled to take the mound for the Bulls. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
