Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - After taking the early lead, the Bulls' pitching staff was shelled for six runs while their offense went stagnant as they fell 6-2 to Lehigh Valley Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the loss, Durham has now been beaten a season-high five games in a row and has suffered its first series sweep of the season, losing all four games to the Iron Pigs. The Bulls have not been swept in a four-game series since July 6 - 9, 2008, versus Norfolk. The Iron Pigs' victory marks Lehigh Valley's first series sweep in franchise history.
The Bulls jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first after a single from Jon Weber drove in Ray Olmedo to take a 1-0 lead. That would be the first lead the Bulls have had in 38 innings, dating back to the fifth inning in last Saturday's game at Buffalo.
Lehigh Valley answered back in the fifth with two runs of its own to retake that lead. Bulls' starting pitcher Matt DeSalvo gave up an RBI-single up the middle and a sacrifice fly as the Iron Pigs went on top 2-1 after five innings.
DeSalvo was charged with two more runs in the seventh before finally calling it a night. He finished the evening with 6 2/3 innings of work, giving up four earned runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts while picking up the loss and falling to 0-1 on the season.
The Iron Pigs added their final two runs in the eighth off Bulls' reliever Dewon Day. Durham tacked on one more run in the bottom of the ninth on a John Jaso groundout, scoring Ray Sadler from third for the last run of the ballgame.
Durham looks to end its losing streak Friday as they began a four-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate. Righty Wade Davis takes the mound for the Bulls with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
