Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Saving the best for last...
The Amarillo Bulls were certainly on point with that on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Blake Roubos netted the game winning goal with 1:44 remaining in regulation time to lift the Bulls past the Texas Tornado 3-2.
It was the Bulls 34th win of the season and it propelled them to a nine point advantage of the Texas Tornado for first place in the South Division. The Tornado suffered their fifth loss in a row and saw their second place lead trimmed to just a single point.
Gage Christianson and Brady Ferguson had the other Bulls goals that were tallied in the second period. It wasn't the best night for the Bulls as they struggled moving the puck and making crisp passes. When things were not going in the right direction, goaltender Paul Berrafato made some big saves to keep his team in the game.
"Our execution wasn't very good tonight," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "I didn't think that defensively we weren't very strong, but the main thing is that we got the two points and the win at home. I told the guys that you can be happy with the win even though it wasn't how we scripted it. But we have to learn from it tomorrow."
Special teams dominated the first 20 minutes with four power plays but no goals. The Texas Tornado opened the scoring with a goal midway through the stanza converting a 2-on-1 rush up the ice. The Bulls outshot the Tornado 11-9 in the first period.
It was a physical second period between the two teams. The Bulls were able to tie the game on a shot from Gage Christianson who finished off a play from Matt Sieckhaus and Clint Carlisle at 3:58. To keep the momentum going off the face-off, John Rey got into a fight with Jason Eddy. The Bulls fed off the energy and took the lead when Brady Ferguson banged home a second attempt at the side of the net from Gage Christianson and Ryan Cole at 9:04. The Bulls outshot the Tornado 15-12 in the middle stanza.
Early in the third period the Tornado tied the game on a shorthanded goal after stealing the puck on a miscue inside the Bulls' zone.
However with the game destined for overtime, Blake Roubos dashed up the ice and made a great move around the Tornado defenseman and his shot beat Hunter Leisner. TJ Sarcona and Tyler Gernhofer added assists on the play. The Tornado pulled their goaltender in the final minute of play but failed to get the equalizer as the Bulls did a great job preventing their opponents from getting any quality scoring chances.
There were nine power plays in the contest with neither team able to score a goal.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Texas Tornado 41-27 including 16-6 in the third period.
Box Score - Amarillo 3 - Texas 2
