Bulls Rally Comes up Short

ODESSA, TX - The Amarillo Bulls surrendered six straight goals, including three in a span of 54 seconds, and dropped a 7-4 decision to the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday night at Ector County Coliseum. The loss was the Bulls second in a row after winning two straight on home ice. It was the first time that the Jackalopes had won back-to-back games versus the Bulls in their time spent in the North American Hockey League.

Amarillo led 1-0 in the first four minutes of the game but Odessa scored four straight in the first period and another two in the second to take a commanding 6-1 advantage. But the Bulls rallied with three straight goals, including two in the second period but were unable to secure the win as the Jacks locked the game up with a seventh goal in the final five minutes.

Joey Molinaro notched one goal and set up two more for Amarillo, while Nick Santoro with his first in the NAHL, Charlie Singerhouse and George Mika had singles. Jacob Weatherly took the loss in goal and was relieved by Anton Martinsson early in the middle frame.

The Amarillo Bulls were looking to rebound after a rough loss on Thursday night. The game began similar to the night previous as Charlie Singerhouse scored on a shot that beat Dean Shatzer up high from Jake Houston. After that, things went south as Odessa tied the game less than a minute later. Just past the midway mark it was Odessa that opened the game up with three straight goals 54 seconds apart. Two of them went off sticks at the side of the net. The Bulls were met with five power plays in the first including an extended five-on-three but were able to cut into the deficit. Odessa outshot Amarillo 10-7 in the first.

The first six minutes of the second period was spent penalty killing by the Bulls and the Jackalopes added to their lead scoring twice more including one on a 5-on-3. But the Bulls held firm and battled back with hard work scoring two. George Mika netted one on the power play from Michael Forman and Joey Molinaro at 9:44. Just before the end of the period, Nick Santoro gets his first NAHL goal from Molinaro to make it 6-3. Amarillo had the shot advantage 17-16 in that period.

The third period started the way the Bulls had hoped with strong pressure on goaltender Dean Shatzer. Joey Molinaro cut into the Odessa lead and made it 6-4 when he scored from a sharp angle from Joey DiBenedetto and George Mika at 6:20. The Bulls kept pressing down the stretch looking to get within a goal but goaltender Shatzer kept the puck out with some solid saves. Odessa halted the Bulls comeback bid scoring off a turnover in the final five minutes.

The Odessa Jackalopes outshot the Amarillo Bulls 38-35 including 12-11 in the third. It was another penalty filled game as the Bulls were 2 for 8 on the power play and the Jackalopes were 1 for 7.

The Amarillo Bulls look to salvage something from the three game set tomorrow (Saturday) night at Ector County Coliseum when they visit the Odessa Jackalopes.
