Bulls Hockey for Health Creates Smiles and Brings a Message

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls Hockey For Health Program continues to bring enthusiasm and excitement to elementary school children, while at the same time sending an important message.

Bulls' players and staff visited nearly 40 classrooms and 1,600 children in the Amarillo Independent School District over the past few weeks, and they are not done yet. There will be a short week of visits to the schools before the Bulls get ready for the Robertson Cup Playoffs that begin in just over two weeks.

"Quite honestly, we couldn't keep up with the demand, over the last two weeks with relative to the amount schools in the Amarillo Independent School District that wanted to be involved," said Bulls Assistant Coach Harry Mahood. "If you would have seen the level of enthusiasm, participation by those young students, it paralleled with the enthusiasm from our players and their interaction."

The Bulls Hockey For Health Program gives young children an opportunity to learn the game of hockey, while also getting a great message about living a healthy lifestyle. Mahood said the Hockey For Health Program goes beyond introducing hockey to the children.

"It just goes to show you how important it is to have those role models, to the young children in those school districts," he explained. "From a players stand point, as we go through the rigors of our season, this helps to keep their feet on the ground, remember where it all began, and some of the things the young people are going through."

Mahood said one area that impressed him was the athleticism of the students especially one young boy from the Philippines.

"He had only been in the country for a few months and just learning English," he said. "That young boy picked up a hockey stick, and it was like he grew up in the northern United States or in Canada. There other thing I was quite taken by was the number of young ladies that participated. It was easily equal to that of the young boys. It's great to see that both sports and hockey are being embraced by boys and girls alike."

Mahood said during one question and answer session, one young boy said he didn't play sports because he wasn't in good enough shape and had anger issues.

"I said to him that is exactly why you play sports when you're young because it gives you an outlet to get off some of that energy you get during the day," he commented. "Together we learn about how our body relates to our mental aspects, and emotions. The younger you learn that the better your life is."

It's the second last road trip of the regular season for the Amarillo Bulls as they hit the ice in Corpus Christi this weekend. The two teams will face one another Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 3 pm at American Bank Center. Fans can tune into the action on CBS Sports Radio 1440, www.amarillobulls.com, and on Pay-Per-View courtesy of Fast Hockey with pre-game coverage 15 minutes before the puck is dropped. Denis J. The North American Hockey League playoffs return to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday, Apr. 5 and Sunday Apr. 6 when the Amarillo Bulls play the first two games of the South Division Semi-Final Series either against the Corpus Christi IceRays or the Wichita Falls Wildcats.

Prices start as low as, silver section $40, red section $52 glass tickets $60 and pit section $68 while children 12 and under are just $28. The package comes with a total of four tickets and should a fifth game be necessary in either of the series fans that purchased the package can get that ticket at a discounted rate.
