Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Durham, N.C. - Slugger Wil Myers proved too much for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) on Sunday evening, as the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) defeated SWB, 7-4. Myers fell just a double short of the cycle, and recorded three hits with three runs driven in. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catcher Bobby Wilson had a big day offensively; he doubled twice and hit a home run.

An error extended the bottom of the first inning, and proved costly for SWB. Vince Belnome reached on an error by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Brett Marshall with two outs. That allowed Wil Myers to bat, who hit a two-run home run to left field.

Shelley Duncan extended the Durham lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the second. It was his second long ball against RailRider pitching this season.

The RailRiders pulled one run back in the third inning. Wilson led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

Durham's big inning came in the fourth, when they plated four runs. Tim Beckham led off with a single to right field, and Cole Figueroa followed with a home run to right field. Juan Apodaca made it back-to-back homers when he powered a fastball over the left field wall. Two outs later, Belnome recorded a base hit, and was sent home when Myers tripled to right field.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth. Addison Maruszak led off with a single through the left side, and moved to third when Wilson followed with his second double of the ballgame. Alberto Gonzalez then singled into right field, which scored Maruszak from third and advanced Wilson to third. Wilson came around to score when Thomas Neal grounded into a double play.

Wilson's big offensive day continued in the ninth inning, as he homered for the third time this season with nobody aboard, which cut the lead to 7-4. The rally would go no further, as Durham held on for the 7-4 win.

Durham starter Mike Montgomery (2-0) gave up three earned runs over six innings, and picked up the win for the Bulls. He conceded just one walk, and struck out four batters.

Marshall (2-4) took the loss for SWB, as he allowed seven runs (five earned) over three and two-thirds innings of work. Jim Miller and Josh Spence finished the ballgame out of the bullpen for the RailRiders.

The RailRiders will try to earn the series split against Durham, and they'll play the Bulls for the final time in the 2013 regular season on Monday afternoon, first pitch is at 1:05 p.m. Kelvin Perez (0-3, 6.06) is the scheduled starter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Durham will send Matt Buschmann (0-0, 0.00) to the hill.
