Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - A third period comeback by the Amarillo Bulls was stopped short on Friday night. The Topeka Road Runners scored game winner with under five minutes remaining in regulation time and held on to beat the Bulls 7-4 in the first of their two game weekend series.
The loss dropped the Bulls to third place as the Texas Tornado held on to beat the Wichita Falls Wildcats 4-3 on home ice. The Tornado trail Topeka by a single point for first place in the South Division.
Brooks Behling scored for the Bulls to tie the game at 4-4 when he stole the puck away from the RoadRunners player and beat the goaltender with a clean shot.
The teams went end to end for nearly 12 minutes until Topeka's Andrew White scored to make it 5-4. The RoadRunners added two empty net goals in the final minute to round out the scoring.
This game was expected to have a lot of intensity and emotion but had just 81 minutes in penalties. The Bulls special times were solid in the game, scoring twice on the power play while blanking Topeka on six attempts.
The game started out with plenty of offense by both teams. All four goals in the opening period were scored in a span of eight minutes. Topeka jumped out in front first, but it would be the Bulls that would tally the next two. First Michael Erickson completed a great passing play from Zack Smoot and Cody Freeman at 10:22. About three minutes later, Joe Kozlak tipped home a shot on the power play from Freeman and Dan McDougall. Topeka would pull even late in the second period on a break up the ice.
In the second period the Bulls dominated but couldn't cash in on their chances and had 21 shots on goal. It would be Topeka that would score two goals in just over three minutes to claim a 4-2 advantage. Amarillo would narrow the game to 4-3 when Joe Kozlak tallied on a power play from Kyle Sucher and Cody Freeman.
The Bulls were outshot by Topeka 41-40 in the contest.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm in the Bull Pen of the Amarillo Civic Center. There will be a mini job fair as several local businesses will be set up on th concourse.
