Bulls Fall to RoadRunners 3-2 on Sunday Afternoon

TOPEKA, KS - The Amarillo Bulls winless streak was extended to four games on Sunday afternoon following a 3-2 to the Topeka RoadRunners at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena.

In their last four games, the Bulls are 0-3-1 and now 2-4-2 overall for seventh in the South Division. A huge stretch of home games start for Jon Rogger's charges on Friday when they face the Wichita Falls Wildcats at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The Bulls will play the next seven consecutive games on home ice.

Elijiah Barriga and Charlie Combs netted goals for Amarillo, while Jacob Weatherly took the loss between the pipes. It was a far better effort for the Bulls who played well during the first and third periods. A second period where the Bulls killed off way too many undisciplined penalties and surrendered two goals proved to be their undoing.

It was a much better start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls and it showed with a better consistency in the play. The Bulls were given a 5 on 3 power play early in the contest but unable to capitalize. Topeka opened the scoring on a knuckle shot that seemed to handcuff goaltender Jacob Weatherly.

Six minutes later, the Bulls converted a fourth power play of the stanza when Elijiah Barriga scored his second of the season from JJ Huerena and Kyle Hartman. Huerena's centering pass was put home by Barriga in front. It was started by a quick face-off win and defense keeping the puck in at the blueline. The RoadRunners outshot the Bulls 10-7 in the first period.

The second period was a tough one for the Amarillo Bulls as they spent a lot of time inside their own end. The Bulls special teams were also kept busy killing off three consecutive penalties. It was the third one that would haunt the Bulls as the RoadRunners scored to take a 2-1 lead. Six minutes later Topeka extended its lead to two goals, scoring on a shot from the face-off circle. The Bulls were outshot and outplayed in the period 11-1 by Topeka.

Another strong third period was needed by the Bulls to mount a charging comeback. Charlie Combs gave his team that big push when he scored from the high slot from Connor Wood and Jesper Synellius.

In the final five minutes the Bulls kept attacking but failed to score on two power plays. The Bulls pulled their goaltender dying minute trying to net the equalizer but Drew Vogler made a couple of timely saves to preserve the win his first against the Amarillo Bulls in four starts.

The Topeka RoadRunners outshot the Amarillo Bulls 32-18. There were 10 total power plays in the game with the Bulls scored two goals on the man advantage and Topeka getting just one.

Hockey returns to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday when they Bulls host the Wichita Falls Wildcats at 7 pm. It's family fun night with fans being able to choose from a couple of ticket packages. The Family 4 Pack consists of four tickets, four sodas and four hotdogs for $44, while the Bring A Bud Pack has two tickets, two sodas and two hotdogs for $22.
