Bulls Fall to IceRays in Wild Night
March 20, 2011 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - It was a game that the Amarillo Bulls would like to forget and saw one opportunity to clinch second place in the NAHL's South Division fall by the wayside.
The Bulls surrendered nine of the last 10 goals and dropped a 10-3 decision to the Corpus Christi IceRays on Sunday night at the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
It was just a 5-3 game to begin the third period, but the IceRays scored early to extend the advantage to three. A four goal outburst over the final five minutes of the game, including the final two on the power play finished a wild final 20 minutes.
The Bulls still have three opportunities to take second place and home ice in the first round with a win in their final three games of the regular season that start on Wednesday in Topeka.
In Sunday's game, a quick goal by the Corpus Christi IceRays gave them the lead at the :35 second mark. However, the Bulls battled back with a pair from Michael Erickson. The first was a 2 on 1 that Erickson finished off on a great pass from Mitch Rogge at the 4:00 mark. Erickson's second of the game was a scramble in front of the net where the goaltender lost sight of the puck. Rogge notched his second assist and Joe Kozlak was also in on the play at 16:17.
It wasn't a terrific second period for the Bulls as their lead would evaporate quickly. Three goals in a four minute span gave Corpus Christi a 4-2 lead and chased starting goaltender Nikifor Szczerba. The Bulls pulled to within one when Sean Keane scored on the power play from Cody Freeman and Karl Beckman at 13:06. The IceRays regained their two goal advantage before the period came to an end.
The Amarillo Bulls visit the Topeka RoadRunners for a pair of games on Wednesday and Thursday at 7 pm at the Kansas Expo Center-Landon Arena. Fans can tune into the games live on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com, beginning with the Bulls Warm Up Show Presented By Wayland Baptist University at 6:45 pm. Denis J. Puska has the play-by-play call to follow.
The final regular season home game for the Bulls is next Saturday, March 26 at 7 pm when they host the Texas Tornado at the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. One lucky fan will have an opportunity to shoot the puck to win a new car.
