Belleville Bulls News Release

BELLEVILLE, ON - The Belleville Bulls and the Peterborough Petes met for the third time this season on Saturday night at the Yardmen Arena. The Bulls were looking to make it two in a row to start 2015 as they were coming off a 2-0 win over the Kingston Frontenacs on New Years Day. Despite opening the scoring just minutes into the first period, the Bulls were handed a 6-2 loss in front of their home crowd.

Defenceman Jordan Subban opened the scoring early when he ripped a wrist shot from the slot by rookie netminder Scott Smith. Welland, Ontario native Niki Petti and Jake Marchment picked up helpers on the games first goal. The lead didn't last long, though, as the Petes answered two and a half minutes later when Colorado Avalanche prospect Michael Clarke buried his 13th of the season on the power play from Matt Spencer and Greg Betzold.

Later in the period the Petes found the back of the net again when 1996-born winger Eric Cornell beat rookie Connor Hicks, who saw his third straight start against Peterborough. The Bulls responded in the dying seconds of the frame as Remi Elie received a beautiful pass from over age forward Brett Welychka and potted his 14th of the year. Michael Cramarossa picked up the other assist. The period came to an end with the score tied at 2. Shots were also tied at 15.

Peterborough controlled most of the middle frame testing Hicks with a number of quality scoring chances. It didn't take long for the visiting Petes to jump ahead as over ager Josh MacDonald buried his 19th of the season just 51 seconds in. They would close out the stanza the same way the started it as sophomore Matt Spencer added an insurance marker for his team at 17:15. The Petes led 36-29 after 40 minutes.

The Pete's picked up right where they left off to begin the final period as Josh MacDonald potted his second of the game at 1:56 from Josh Coyle and Steven Varga. Rookie centre Jonathan Ang would add one more just over a minute later to seal the victory for his squad. Stephen Nosad and Josh Maguire were credited with assists on the games final goal.

Connor Hicks made 42 saves while his counterpart Scott Smith made 38. The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday, January 7th when the Windsor Spitfires make their lone visit to the Yardmen Arena.
