Bulls Fall 5-2 At Rochester

May 26, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Durham Bulls News Release

(Rochester, NY) Chad Orvella pitched valiantly, but allowed a two-out three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in a 5-2 loss to Rochester on Tuesday.

Because of five call-ups this week due to injuries in Tampa Bay, and in Durham, the Bulls had just two relievers available on Tuesday.

Orvella worked a 1-2-3 sixth and seventh for James Houser. However, because the team was shorthanded, he worked a third inning in the eighth. He allowed a leadoff single to Jose Morales, and then pinch runner Tommy Watkins moved to second on a groundout outside the batter's circle by Justin Huber. Dustin Martin was walked intentionally, and Trevor Plouffe followed with a 5-4 fielder's choice. David Winfree followed with a line-drive homer to left for the final 5-2 margin.

Durham had taken a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fourth. Matt Hall's first Triple-A hit, a single to left scored the first run. Matt Joyce tripled to start the fourth and scored on a wild pitch for the second and final run.

James Houser allowed a two-run homer in the fourth after a two-out ground ball was mishandled that was scored a hit.

Durham, with five players in the lineup out to injury or call-ups had just six hits, two by Nowak.

The Bulls, still 28-17, and 4-2 on an eight-game road trip, will look to bounce back on Wednesday as Mitch Talbot (3-4) takes the mound. Coverage on 99.9 the Fan's HD2 begins at 6:45, with first pitch at 7:05.
