Belleville Bulls News Release
OSHAWA, ON - The Belleville Bulls and the Oshawa Generals wrapped up a weekend home-and-home series
Sunday night at the GM Centre. It was another battle of special teams as the Bulls scored two on the man advantage and one short handed but fell to the Generals 4-3 in another long shootout.
With a sour taste in their mouths following Saturday night's loss, the Bulls were looking for revenge on a streaking Generals club. Penalties were the story of the first 20 minutes as some bad blood continued over from round one of back-to-back games. Seven minors were handed out but neither team could capitalize on the man advantage. The Generals led 15-6 in shots after the first period.
The goals started to pile up in the second. Brett Gustavsen was sent to the box for tripping just under two minutes in and this time the Generals made no mistake converting on the power play. Hunter Smith beat Charlie Graham for his 12th of the season from Michael Dal Colle and Tobias Lindberg to put the Gens on the board first.
The lead didn't last too long, thanks to back-to-back Oshawa penalties, giving the Bulls an important 5 on 3 power play. Team leader in points, Remi Elie stepped accross the blue line and blasted home his 10th of the year from Brett Gustavsen and Jordan Subban at 7:19. Newly acquired Brett Welychka got into the action, this time while the Bulls were killing a Stephen Harper penalty. The former London Knight took a pass from line mate Jake Marchment and ripped a blistering wrister by Ken Appleby to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. Defenceman Justin Lemcke picked up the other assist on Welychka's first regulation goal as a Belleville Bull.
Belleville wasn't finished, though. On another power play opportunity Adam Laishram banged home a loose puck out front to give the Bulls a two-goal lead. Wellington, Ontario native Alex Yuill was credited with his sixth assist of the season as the Bulls headed to the dressing room up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
The fast paced action continued in the third as the Generals came out firing looking to battle their way back. Just 1:16 into the period, New York Islanders prospect Michael Dal Colle beat a sprawling Charlie Graham to bring his club within one. 15 seconds later Cole Cassels made it a tie game with a goal assisted by Bradley Latour and Hunter Smith. Both clubs had some chances down the stretch but neither could find the go-ahead goal. The Gens led 36-23 in shots after regulation.
Overtime solved nothing as another game had to be decided in a shootout. In the 8th round, Mitchell Vande Sompel sealed the victory for the Generals giving them a 6-point lead over the Bulls in the OHL's Eastern Conference. Successful shooters for Belleville were Stephen Harper and Michael Cramarossa.
