July 17, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers recorded their 12th consecutive victory with a 8-6 triumph over the Chico Outlaws at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Dallas Mahan (2-2) was great coming out of the bullpen for the Snakes as he went four innings for the win giving up one earned run while striking out five. The Vipers took a 3-0 lead early but then fell behind 5-3 before rallying in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead for good. The Snakes are now 6-0 in the second half to lead the North Division and 32-13 overall to lead the entire Golden Baseball League.

Travis Hughes tossed the eighth inning without giving up a hit or walk and striking out two while Mac Suzuki (4) took over for the ninth frame and recorded the save without giving up a hit and striking out two as well. Evan White (4-4) took the loss in giving up the eight runs in six innings.

At the plate every Snake had at least one hit with Colin Moro and Caonabo Cosme leading the way as Moro went two-for-three with two runs scored and batted in while Cosme was two-for-four with a home run and three RBI.

Calgary took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Nelson Castro singled, Jorge Mejia reached on a fielder's choice, Mejia stole second base, and with two outs Moro drove in a run with an infield single. Cosme followed with a two run shot for his second home run of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Chico responded in a big way in the top of the third as Bryan Silverman walked, Dan Luyben doubled, Blake Gailen also walked to load the bases, and Dale Swinford plated two runs with a single. After a double-steal to move runners into scoring position Rich Janeway tied the game with a sacrifice fly and with two outs Shane Cronin knocked in the go-ahead run with a base hit for a 4-3 advantage.

A run was added to the Outlaws lead in the fourth inning as Silverman tripled and scored on a throwing error for a 5-3 score.

The Vipers tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame as Rick Guarno and Ivan Reyes hit back-to-back doubles, Dillon O'Krane singled, and Fehlandt Lentini cashed a run with fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Calgary took their second lead of the game as Mejia doubled, Moro walked, and both Cosme and Guarno cashed runs with singles for a 7-5 advantage.

A run was added in the sixth frame as the Snakes restored their three run lead at 8-5 when Lentini singled and scored on a Moro run batted in double.

Chico got that run back in the seventh as Swinford walked, stole both second and third base, and scored on a Truan Mehl RBI sacrifice fly to make the score 8-6.

Saturday July 18th at 5:05 PM MDT the Zoomobile from the Calgary Zoo will be on site with animals and giveaways for a double-header scheduled between the two teams. Evan Greusel (5-1, 6.75) is on the hill for game two and is 5-0 in his last eight starts.

This five-games-in-four-days series wraps up Sunday July 19th at 1:35 PM MDT with a "You Already Have What it Takes" Police Recruitment day at the stadium. Joe Sergent (3-3, 3.65) will be on the mound for Calgary and is coming off back-to-back no-decisions.
