Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - In search of three straight wins over the Edmonton Capitals, the Victoria Seals made their return to Royal Athletic Park on Thursday night. With the visitors sending Mike Johnson (0-1) to the hill, Victoria responded with James Garcia (0-0) for the start.

Opening the scoring in the bottom of the first, the Seals used an RBI double from Sergio Pedroza and base hit from Jamar Hill to grab a 2-0 lead. The Capitals would strike back in the top of the second, though, when a lead-off single from Joey Gomes followed by back-to-back walks all scored on two straight singles from Matt Ceriani and Marcus Nettles to put Edmonton up by a 4-2 score.

After a double from Wilver Perez cashed Bret LeVier to bring the Seals within one, the Capitals responded again in the top of the third with a home run off the bat of Gomes to restore their two-run lead. The Seals would then jump into the driver's seat once more in the bottom of the inning, getting a first-pitch home run from Josh Arhart along with back-to-back sacrifice fly balls from Chris Van Rossum and LeVier to take a 6-5 advantage.

Then the home side kicked down the door in the bottom half of the fourth. After Pedroza got the ball rolling with a solo shot, the Seals loaded the bases with a single from Hill, a hit-by-pitch from Arhart and a base hit from Brian Rios. An RBI single from Carlos Duncan extended the Seals lead once more, and with David Moraga entering in relief for Edmonton, Brett Flowers offered a rude welcome with a grand slam deep to left field for a 12-5 Victoria lead. Capping off the scoring with a walk that would later score on a free pass to Hill, Van Rossum registered the Seals' seventh run of the frame to stretch the lead to eight runs through four innings.

Adding another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Flowers sent Victoria to the top of the sixth frame with a 14-5 lead. Picking up a three-run home run from Matt Ceriani to make things interesting in the sixth, the Capitals surrendered those three runs right back in the bottom half of the inning when Pedroza notched his second home run of the contest and Flowers finished off a 7-RBI night with a double to bring the score to 17-8.

Despite a double from Jorge Cortes to bring the score to 17-9 in the top of the ninth, Edmonton would come no closer to the Seals as Graham Campbell stepped in to close out Victoria's biggest offensive push of the season.

James Garcia was strong with 7 strikeouts en route to his first win of the year, while Mike Johnson falls to 0-1 with the loss. Brett Flowers had a banner night for the Seals, posting a 3-for-4 outing with 7 RBI's, while Sergio Pedroza was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI's of his own. Matt Ceriani was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI's in a losing effort for the Capitals, who have now surrendered 67 Victoria hits and 46 runs in the last four games.
