Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Staten Island Yankees scored two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to overcome a two-run deficit to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 8-6 Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. The loss was the first home defeat of the year for the Renegades.
Hudson Valley got going in the first inning against Staten Island starting pitcher, and minor league rehabber, Erik Swanson. Back-to-back singles to begin the inning put runners at the corners with nobody out when Swanson balked to force in the first run. With designated hitter Tanner Dodson at second and one out following the balk, Dodson promptly stole third, then scored when third baseman Adrian Rondon lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead.
Staten Island used a big three-run inning in the third to take the lead. With one out and runners at first and second, centerfielder Alex Junior chopped a single to right to score the first run. Two batters later, runners stood at second and third when third baseman Andrew Chaparro roped a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Yankees a 3-2 advantage.
The Yankees manufactured a run to up their lead in the fifth. Shortstop Eduardo Torrealba led off the inning with a resounding double to left, then went to third on a groundout to first from designated hitter Jackson Thoreson. With one away, catcher Charles Vazquez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Torreabla and increase the Staten Island lead to 4-2.
Hudson Valley got two more of their own to tie the game in the fifth thanks to some mound struggles from the Yankees. With one out, a fielder's choice and walk put runners at first and second before a double steal moved each runner up a base. From there, Yankees reliever drew Finley uncorked a wild pitch to score second baseman Justin Bridgman and move centerfielder Michael Smith to third. Smith scored two batters later on a passed ball to tie the game.
The home team took the lead in the sixth as a two-run inside-the-park homerun from catcher Erik Ostberg put the Renegades in front. With a runner at third and nobody out, Ostberg sent a sinking line drive that landed in front of leftfielder Canaan Smith, bounced over his head, and rolled all the way to the wall. With both runners scoring, Hudson Valley took a 6-4 lead.
Staten Island got off the deck with two runs of their own in the eighth to tie the game. With one out and a runner at first, Chaparro roped an RBI double down the rightfield line to score pinch runner Andy Diaz and pull the Yankees to within one. Two batters later, with Chaparro at third and two away, second baseman Kyle Gray tied the game with an infield single to second.
The Yankees took the lead with a two run rally in the ninth, which started with two out and no one on base. Catcher Charles Vazquez reached on an infield single to short before centerfielder Alex Junior drove him in on an RBI double to right-centerfield to give Staten Island the lead. The next hitter, first baseman Miguel Flames, scored Junior on an RBI single to right to make the final 8-6.
Staten Island had 13 hits in the game with five receiving multiple hits. Chaparro went 2-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored. Junior finished 2-5 with a double, RBI and two runs. Torrealba had a double and single with a run scored. Vazquez scored twice and drove in a run with two singles, and Ford finished with two singles and a run scored.
The Renegades finished with seven hits, with Ostberg registering two of them. He hit an inside-the-park homer and drove in two runs.
Getting the win for Staten Island was reliever Abel Duarte (1-1) who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit. Renegades reliever Jack Labosky (1-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Closer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season for Staten Island.
The Renegades will complete their series and homestand with Staten Island tomorrow. First-pitch is set for 7:05 and will include a postgame fireworks show. Righty Nick Padilla (1-2, 4.09 ERA) will be on the hill for the Renegades against fellow right-hander Matt Sauer (0-1, 2.40 ERA) of the Yankees.
