Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - Gio Arriera eclipsed career highs with 12 strikeouts in seven innings and the Connecticut Tigers (7-12) forced an extra inning with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Lowell Spinners (9-10) held on for a 7-4 win in 10 innings on Independence Day at Dodd Stadium.
Lowell tallied two triples in the top of the first against Arriera. Tyler Esplin's two-out, RBI triple to left made it 2-0 Lowell and the Spinners tagged Arriera for another earned run in the second. The 20-year-old Tigers starter from Hialeah, Florida recovered in the third and retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced. The 2017 Detroit Tigers fourth-round draft pick struck out more batters than any other Tigers pitcher this season in a single start with a dozen. Arriera topped his previous career high of eight strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings in his last home start against the Staten Island Yankees on June 29.
Trailing 3-1 in the seventh with two runners on base, Shane Cooper reached on a fielding error by Lowell shortstop Korby Batesole and Ulrich Bojarski scored from second to cut the Connecticut deficit to 3-2. Lowell stole the run back in the eighth by sending two runners as part of a double steal that allowed Jarren Duran to score from third while Cole Brannen was thrown out at second.
Connecticut erased a 4-2 deficit in the ninth by loading the bases against Spinners reliever Danny Bethea (Blown Save, 1). Following a leadoff walk by Bojarski, Alexis Garcia ripped his second triple in two days and chopped the Lowell lead to 4-3. The Tigers loaded the bases and Sam McMillan scored Garcia with a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tigers failed to secure their third walkoff win of the year as Bethea recorded the final two outs of the ninth and left the bases loaded to force an extra inning. Connecticut batted 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday night.
In the tenth, Lowell utilized the tie-breaking runner placed at second base to seize the lead for good. Grandberg drove in the go-ahead run on a single to left and Jonathan Ortega put the game out of reach with a two-run single to right against Victor Mueses (Loss, 0-2).
Bethea earned his first win of 2018 for Lowell by pitching a perfect tenth inning. The Tigers fell to 0-2 in extra innings this year despite striking out a season-high 16 batters as a team in front of the second-largest crowd at Dodd Stadium this season with 5,274 in attendance.
On Thursday, Connecticut resumes the series against the Stedler Division-rival Lowell Spinners at Dodd Stadium with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Carlos Guzman (0-1, 5.40) gets the start against Lowell righty Hunter Haworth (0-1, 5.14). The Tigers will play in Norwich Navigators uniforms as part of their Throwback Thursday promotion featuring domestic draft beers starting at two dollars each.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut.
