
Bullfrogs Have Tough Night in Wausau

Wausau, WI. - The host Wisconsin Woodchucks (27-40, 15-17) scored 10 combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to cruise past the visiting Green Bay Bullfrogs (26-41, 14-17) by a final score of 18-5 at Athletic Park Monday evening. The Bullfrogs trailed by three runs entering the bottom of the sixth inning before the Woodchuck's bats went off.
Green Bay struck first in the opening frame on a RBI single by Adrian Damla (Sophomore, UC Irvine) after a lead-off double by Preston Pavlica (Junior, Grand Canyon Univ.) to give the Frogs an early 1-0 lead. Wisconsin tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a RBI ground out by Zach DeLoach.
The Woodchucks offense posted a four-spot in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run blast from Dom DeRenzo to put the hosts in front 5-1. The three-run homer was one of two in the game for DeRenzo.
The Bullfrogs cut the deficit down to 5-3 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Pavlica and a RBI single from Keaton Smith (Junior, Nevada). Wisconsin scored three straight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to stretch the advantage to 8-3. Green Bay made it an 8-5 game in the top of the sixth on Pavlica's second sacrifice fly of the game followed by Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo (Freshman, Navarro College) scoring on an error.
Wisconsin opened the offensive floodgates in the sixth and seventh frames with five runs each in both innings to stretch the lead to a commanding 18-5 advantage. The Woodchucks smacked three home runs with a pair of three-run shots in the scoring stretch.
Blaise Maris (Sophomore, Florida Tech) posted his 24th multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 effort to lead the offense. Evan Hylek (Sophomore, Ivy Tech Fort Wayne) was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Pavlica finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Wisconsin starting pitcher Greg Dunham earned the win, improving to 4-2. Green Bay starter Ryan Gowens took the loss, dropping to 1-3.
The Green Bay Bullfrogs have the off-day tomorrow due to the 2018 Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase. Pavlica, Damla and starting pitcher Leo Perez (Freshman, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) will participate in the annual event, taking place in Madison, WI at The Duck Pond.
Green Bay will return to Wausau Wednesday night to conclude the two-game series with the Woodchucks. First pitch is slated for a 6:35 p.m. start.
