Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NF – The Hamilton Bulldogs snapped a season-high four-game road losing streak by defeating the St. John's Maple Leafs 5-1 at Mile One Stadium on Saturday night.

The Maple Leafs jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 12:51 of the first period when St. John's forward Brad Leeb scored his 21st of the season. However, that would be all the scoring for the Maple Leafs, as the Bulldogs would score five unanswered goals for the victory.

Scoring goals for the Bulldogs on Saturday were Chris Higgins (2), Philippe Plante, Alexander Perezhogin, and Marc-Andre Thinel. The goal scored by Thinel was his first with the Bulldogs.

Earning multi-points in the game for Hamilton were Higgins (2g,1a) and Patrick Traverse (2a).

Bulldogs goaltender Jean-Francois Damphousse made 21 saves and improved his record to 16 wins, 9 losses and 4 ties. Jean-Francois Racine stopped 41 shots and took the loss for the Maple Leafs.

On special teams the Bulldogs scored once on seven power plays. Hamilton did not allow St. John's to score on their two power play opportunities.

Hamilton's record versus St. John's through eleven meetings this season now stands at nine wins and two overtime losses.

The Bulldogs overall record now improves to 36 wins, 22 losses, 10 ties and 4 overtime losses. Hamilton remains in first place in the AHL's North Division with 86 points.

The Hamilton Bulldogs magic point total to clinch a playoff position is just one point. If the Maple Leafs tie or lose to the Syracuse Crunch in on Wednesday, the Bulldogs will earn a playoff birth for the seventh time in the past eight seasons.

The Hamilton Bulldogs next action will take place on Friday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m., as the Bulldogs will host the St. John's Maple Leafs at Copps Coliseum. The Bulldogs will honour the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey" at this game. The lower bowl of seating for Friday's contest is completely sold-out. However, Bulldogs fans can purchase $10 upper bowl seats at all eleven Hamilton/Burlington Fortinos locations, at the Hamilton Bulldogs office, by calling Ticketmaster at (905) 527-7666 or going on-line at www.ticketmaster.ca. Proceeds from the upper bowl tickets will go towards Travis' Battle, a charitable fund set up to support Travis Carter, a six-year-old Ancaster boy who suffers from Battens Disease. Travis has been one of ten children chosen to receive experimental surgery.
