Houston Aeros News Release
The Houston Aeros have reassigned defenseman Ben Storey to the ECHL's Louisiana IceGators. Storey has played five games with Houston with one assist, including two games without a point in his most recent recall.
Tonight's broadcast starts at 6:30 p.m. from The Scope and can be heard on KBME 790 AM or via www.aeros.com. Follow along on the website with period by period recaps.
Houston Aeros at Norfolk Admirals, 3/20
Five things you absolutely need to know before reading any further â
Aeros centerman Mark Cullen has helped raise $450 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the organization. Cullen, who was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last fall, has a goal and seven assists since the campaign started March 5.
Houston plays game three of a four-game road trip tonight. The trek concludes at The Scope tomorrow afternoon. After this trip the Aeros, who are 2-12-5-1 in their last 20 road games, have only eight games left â six at home.
The Aeros haven't yielded a first-period goal in the last eight games dating back to the Milwaukee game on February 26. Houston has also scored first in eight straight games.
Norfolk and Houston are the only two AHL teams who don't yet have a 40-point scorer this season. Ajay Baines has 36 to lead Norfolk, while Stephane Veilleux's 38 lead the Aeros. With Veilleux in Minnesota, Travis Roche's 34 points top the club.
The Admirals' scoreless sequence sits at 138 minutes, 39 seconds, dating back to Matt Ellison's goal against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton March 10, and they haven't scored an even strength goal in 145 minutes, 58 seconds.
Aeros at Admirals (Aeros lead all-time series 4-2-0-0 overall, Aeros are 1-1-0-0 at Norfolk)
Tonight is the seventh all-time regular-season meeting between the teams â third in Norfolk.
The Aeros swept a two-game series from the Admirals December 16-17 at Toyota Center, with Johan Holmqvist's 24-save shutout keying a 1-0 win in the set's opener. Kyle Wanvig had both game-winning goals.
Houston was 2-2-0-0 against the Admirals during the 2002-03 regular season, with one of the two wins coming in overtime in Norfolk.
Both of the series meetings (regular season) in Norfolk were decided by one goal. The Admirals beat Houston 5-4 on November 29, 2002, but the Aeros rebounded with a 2-1 overtime win (Jean-Guy Trudel goal) the next night.
The teams finish off their four-game season series tomorrow afternoon at The Scope.
Houston and Norfolk met in the 2003 Western Conference Semifinals, with the eventual Calder Cup champion Aeros winning the series 4-2.
In the Aeros' trip to Norfolk in last season's playoffs, they won the final two of the three games to take a 3-2 series lead back to Houston.
Counting the 2003 post-season meeting, Houston has won five straight games against the Admirals, who have scored only seven goals in that span.
2003-04 meetings (Third of four meetings, Houston leads 2-0-0-0 overall, First meeting in Norfolk)
December 16 â Norfolk 0 at Houston 1
December 17 â Norfolk 3 at Houston 5
Tonight â Houston at Norfolk
Tomorrow â Houston at Norfolk
Last game â Mike Glumac tallied a goal and two assists in a five-score second period and Curtis Sanford finished with 36 saves, as the Worcester IceCats shook off a slow start for a 5-2 victory over the Houston Aeros at Centrum Centre. Scott Pellerin and Terry Virtue each had a goal and an assist in the stanza and Trevor Byrne and Blake Evans also scored for Worcester, which has won two straight after a three-game winless streak (0-2-0-1). Johan Holmqvist made 13 saves over 40 minutes and Jeff Hoggan and Kyle Wanvig scored for the Aeros, who fell to 5-2-1-1 in their last nine. Mark Cullen posted two assists, raising another $100 for Sunshine Kids and pushing the total raised to $450. The line of Hoggan, Wanvig and Cullen combined for all six of Houston's scoring points.
Scouting the Aeros â Houston, 5-2-1-1 in its last nine, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight against the IceCats. The Aeros are still playing without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12+26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14+17=31) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (5+14=19) have since joined Veilleux with the Wild. Defenseman Travis Roche (6+28=34) is the leading active scorer, one point ahead of Kyle Wanvig (22+11=33), who has a team-best 22 goals, and two points up on Dan Cavanaugh (12+20=32). Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, has played 55 of the team's first 70 games, going 21-26-6 with a 2.55 goals against average and three shutouts. Kyle Kettles is 3-7-5 with a 2.59 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 14 starts, the Aeros have scored 24 goals in front of the rookie netminder.
Scouting the Admirals â Norfolk is in a four-team tussle for the final two playoff spots out of the East Division, and the Admirals didn't help themselves out with a pair of shutout losses last weekend. Hershey blanked Norfolk 2-0 Saturday, a night after Wilkes-Barre defeated the Admirals by the same score. Norfolk had been shut out in eight of its first 31 games, but just one time since until the string. The Admirals' scoreless sequence sits at 138 minutes, 39 seconds, dating back to Matt Ellison's goal against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton March 10, and they haven't scored an even strength goal in 145 minutes, 58 seconds. Norfolk, which had won 11 of 13 prior to the two-game skid, is led in scoring by Ajay Baines (13+23=36), who is a point ahead of defenseman Marty Wilford (3+32=35), a former Aero. Putting the same team on the ice night after night has been the problem for Norfolk, which has had a carousel of players going back and forth between Virginia and the Chicago Blackhawks in recent weeks. Five goalies have dressed for both teams, including current go-to netminder Craig Anderson, who is 15-16-0 with a nifty 1.93 goals against average. His backup, rookie Matt Underhill, has yet to appear in a game with Norfolk but did play in Chicago.
Aeros/Admirals connections â
Norfolk netminder Craig Anderson played two full seasons of juniors at Guelph with Aeros defenseman Kevin Mitchell (1998-99 and 1999-2000).
Houston defenseman Chris Heid played juniors with Brandin Cote for three seasons (1999-2002).
The Admirals' Marty Wilford played 45 games for the IHL Aeros in the 1999-2000 season, notching nine assists and 30 penalty minutes. Wilford also played nine games with Hartford in 2001-02, protecting Johan Holmqvist.
Houston head coach Todd McLellan and the Admirals' Trent Yawney were teammates in the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons with WHL Saskatoon.
New Aeros winger Alex Materukhin and Norfolk's Anton Babchuk each hail from Kiev, Ukraine.
Houston goalie Johan Holmqvist played the 2000-01 season with Burke Henry in Hartford.
Norfolk center Jason Morgan was Jan Vodrazka's teammate last season in Saint John.
Great to see someone different â Last weekend, Houston wrapped up a streak where it played 20 consecutive games against the West Division, going 8-9-2-1. The Aeros, who are 18-23-8-2 overall against the West, are 2-0-0-0 against the East, with both games coming against the Admirals. After this road trip, the final eight games of the season will all be against the West.
Aeros streaking at the right time â
Houston is 5-2-1-1 over its last nine games, but the Aeros are winless in two straight (0-1-0-1).
Houston has 10 wins in its last 38 games (10-17-9-2) and is one game above the .500 mark the last 48 games (19-18-9-2).
The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.
Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.
The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.
In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 50 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.50 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.74 goals against per game, 17th in the AHL.
Key road trip continues â
Tonight the Aeros, 1-1-1-1 in their last four away from Toyota Center, will try for their second road win in the last 21 attempts. The Aeros are 8-20-6-2 on the road, including a 2-12-6-0 mark in the last 20 games since December 23.
Houston had been unbeaten in regulation in three straight road games (1-0-1-1), one off its season-high, before a 5-2 loss in Worcester Wednesday.
The Aeros snapped a franchise-record nine-game winless streak (0-7-2-0) February 27 with a 5-1 win in San Antonio.
Houston has one set of back-to-back road wins this season (Cincinnati and Utah December 20-23).
The Aeros' 20 road losses are one off Utah, Springfield and Cincinnati's AHL high.
Houston is one road defeat off its franchise record of 21, set in 1995-96, with four games left including tonight.
"O" exploding â
The Aeros are averaging 2.92 goals per game in the last 12 games to improve to 2.39 goals per game, 20th in the AHL.
Houston has been held to two goals or fewer in 26 of the last 41 games (63.4 percent), including a scoreless streak of 178 minutes, 52 seconds that included back-to-back shutouts January 8-9.
Houston has scored two goals or less in 42 of 70 games (60.0 percent) this season.
Aeros, Ducks, Rampage, Grizzlies in a playoff dog-fight â Houston has 63 points, four more than Cincinnati, five more than San Antonio and eight more than Utah in the West Division. Cincinnati, which has three games in hand on the Aeros, beat Cleveland 1-0 last night and is at home against the Barons tonight, then Utah tomorrow. San Antonio, which has five games in hand on Houston, tied Chicago 2-2 at home last night, is off tonight and plays host to red-hot Milwaukee tomorrow. Utah, which along with Houston has played 70 games, got blown out 7-2 by Milwaukee last night at home and is in Chicago tonight and Cincinnati tomorrow to finish off an exhausting week. The top five teams in the West make the playoffs, with the fourth- and fifth-place team playing a three-game qualifying series at the higher seed. Home ice will be important, since the four teams chasing the final two playoff spots are a combined 44 games under .500 on the road.

Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark â Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 22 Wednesday against Worcester. Wanvig has 34 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 33 alone with the Aeros (22+11=33). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.
Holmqvist has lost two straight - Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist had his four-game winning streak snapped in last Saturday's 2-1 overtime loss in San Antonio. He's now 0-2-0 with a 4.20 goals against average in his last two games. Holmqvist yielded five goals in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Worcester, after allowing only five over his previous five games. Holmqvist has five wins (5-8-1) in his last 14 games, but the Aeros have scored just 14 goals in those nine non-wins (1.56 gpg).
Holmqvist, the 2003 Butterfield Trophy winner as Calder Cup Playoffs MVP, sports a 26-29-6 mark with Houston.
Holmqvist's current 2.55 goals against average is a career best.
Holmqvist went 6-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage during a six-game winning streak December 5-17. The six-game winning streak set a new career-high.
The Aeros' netminder had a shutout streak of 189 minutes, seven seconds snapped December 17, just missing Frederic Chabot's 1996 team record mark of 193 minutes, 37 seconds.
In his 21 wins this season, Holmqvist is allowing 1.00 goals per game and sports a .962 save percentage. In his 34 non-wins, Holmqvist has a 3.55 goals against average and a .873 save percentage.
Holmqvist leads the AHL in minutes played (3,222), is third in saves (1,341) and is tied for third in wins (21).
Holmqvist has played in 55 games â three more than his previous career-high in 2001-02. Arguably the most durable AHL goalie in recent memory, Holmqvist is the only goalie to play 43 or more AHL games in each of the past four seasons.
Holmqvist can't be beat late in the season â It's no surprise that Aeros goalie Johan Holmqvist won his first three March starts this season. Holmqvist, who of course backstopped the Aeros to the 2003 Calder Cup, is 19-11-2 all-time in March. Those 19 victories are tied with his December total for his most in any month, and he's played six fewer games in March. Holmqvist was 5-3-0 in March 2003, including a 3-2-0 mark with Houston. Holmqvist has lost back-to-back March starts for the first time since March 18-28 of 2001, and he's never lost three March starts in a row.
Kettles wins a big one â
Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27. Kettles made a season-best 34 saves March 5 but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.
Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.
The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.
The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 12 goals in his last four starts.
Mitchell a power-play specialist â
Defenseman Kevin Mitchell has 18 points (3+15=18) with the Aeros, and 12 of those points have come on the power play. Last season with ECHL Louisiana, Mitchell had 23 of his 34 points with the man advantage.
Mitchell has 21 career goals counting his ECHL totals, and an eye-popping 16 have come on the power play. Five of Mitchell's six AHL goals have come with the man advantage.
Mitchell had points in five straight games (1+5=6) for the first time in his AHL career January 23-31.
Mitchell's five-game assist streak was an Aeros season-high by two games.
The blueliner has five points (1+4=5) over the last eight games and 15 points (3+12=15) in the last 24 games.
Holmqvist 4-0-2 in regular season against Norfolk â Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist is an unbeaten 4-0-2 with a 2.43 goals against average in six regular season appearances versus Norfolk. That includes two victories, including a shutout, and a 1.50 goals against average this season. In the 2003 Western Conference Semifinals, Holmqvist went 4-2 versus Norfolk. Kyle Kettles has yet to face the Admirals.
Anderson 0-2-0 versus Houston â Norfolk goalie Craig Anderson is 0-2-0 with a 2.53 goals against average in two regular-season appearances against the Aeros, both coming this season. Anderson went 0-2 versus Houston in the 2003 Western Conference Semis.
The youth shall lead them â Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 70 games, nearly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game. Of Houston's 453 scoring points, 223 (49.2 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 227 (50.1 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's eight top scorers were born during the Reagan administration.
Career highs all around â You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (55 games played, 3222 minutes, 2.55 goals against average); Erik Reitz (17 assists, 21 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points); Marc Cavosie (9 goals, 17 assists, 26 points); Dan Cavanaugh (20 assists, 32 points); Kevin Mitchell (3 goals tie career high, 15 assists, 18 points); Jeff Hoggan (15 goals, 12 assists, 27 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (22 goals, 33 points); Jason Beckett (132 PIM's).
Heid a rookie coming into his own â Coaches will tell you that this late in the season, rookies are rookies no more. That's the case with Aeros defenseman Chris Heid, who has a goal and three assists in the last six games. Overall in the last eight games, Heid sports a plus-seven rating. Heid assisted on Jeff Hoggan's game-winning goal March 12 versus San Antonio.
Hoggan has two of three game-winners â Aeros winger Jeff Hoggan is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals, including the important tally in two of the last three victories. Also, two of Hoggan's three game-winners this season have come versus San Antonio, including a goal late in the second period in a 2-1 victory March 12. The Aeros are 14-5-4-2 when Hoggan has a point and 7-4-2-2 when he scores a goal.
Aeros still winless in OT â The Aeros, winless at 0-4-11 in overtime, have played just three extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice in late February in the extra session, and just one team (Cleveland) has only one overtime win. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 11 ties are still seven short of the AHL/overtime era record, set in 1997-98 by St. John's. Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (7-0-8) are without a loss in overtime this season.
Aeros have scored first in eight straight â Houston has scored the game's first goal in eight straight games to set a season-high. The Aeros' previous best was six games from December 27-January 4. The Aeros had allowed the first goal in five straight games prior to starting their current run February 27 against San Antonio. Houston is 19-8-5-2 overall when scoring first.
But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 5-23-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal, including a winless 0-15-4-0 mark on the road. By rallying for a 3-3 tie February 26 in Milwaukee, Houston picked up its fourth road point when allowing the first goal.
Houston has three wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 21-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they have three wins (3-31-8-3) when yielding two or more.
Not comeback artists â Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-25-6-1). The Aeros are also the only AHL team that is winless when trailing after one period (0-21-2-2). Since 1994-95, just one team â Manchester in 2001-02 â has gone through a season without a win when trailing after one period. The Monarchs did, however, get wins when trailing after two. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.
Penalty kill update â
The Aeros' overall 85.6 percent penalty kill rate (274-320) is 15th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.
Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 46-for-289 (15.9 percent) on the power play.
Opponents are 11-for-54 (20.4 percent) on the power play over the last 12 games and have scored 17 man-advantage goals in the last 19 games.
The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 36 of their 70 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (14-9-9-4).
Norfolk is ranked 25th in the AHL on the power play at 12.0 percent. The Admirals are actually much worse at home (10.6 percent, 26th) than on the road (13.4 percent). Norfolk's 15 home power-play goals are the fewest in the league.
The Admirals are 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) on the power play over the last five games.
Norfolk went 0-for-4 against Houston in the two December meetings at Toyota Center.
Power play update â
Houston enters tonight's game 49 of 385 on the power play (12.7 percent), 20th among 28 AHL teams.
The Aeros have gone 36-for-242 (14.9 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.7.
The Aeros are 2-for-29 (6.9 percent) on the power play in their last seven road games.
Houston is 6-for-37 (16.2 percent) on the power play over its last eight games since going 0-for-20 in the previous four.
Houston's 385 power plays are the most in the AHL, six more than second-place Manitoba. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.
The Aeros have only six wins in 35 games (6-21-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.
Norfolk is ranked fourth in the AHL on the penalty kill at 88.2 percent, including 90.3 percent at home, second in the AHL.
The Admirals have killed off 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) of their shorthanded chances over the last five games.
Houston went 2-for-11 against Norfolk in two December meetings at Toyota Center, getting seven more power play chances than the Admirals did. Kyle Wanvig and Rickard Wallin had the power play tallies.
Houston at 70-game mark â The Aeros passed the official midway point of the season with a 14-15-8-3 mark and now sport a 24-31-11-4 record. Below is a breakdown of Houston's season so far in 10-game segments.

New additions â The Aeros are playing with a pair of new players this weekend â ECHL Louisiana callups Alex Materukhin and Maxime Fortunus. Materukhin, 22, (10/17/81) has enjoyed a breakout second pro season with the IceGators, racking up 58 points (26+32=58) and 126 penalty minutes in 62 games. His point total, which ranks him second on the Louisiana team, is 32 more than his 26-point (13+13=26) rookie campaign with ECHL Richmond in 2002-03. Materukhin (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) leads the IceGators with seven game-winning goals and three shorthanded tallies. Fortunus, 20, (7/28/83) has posted 17 points (3+14=17) and 27 penalty minutes in 63 games with Louisiana. The rookie's plus-27 rating is second among all ECHL rookies and fifth among defensemen. He also played two games with the Aeros on December without picking up a point. The 6-foot, 190-pound Fortunus is the youngest active player on the Aeros' roster. He's more than two months younger than Matt Foy.
Not weekend road warriors â Houston has had its struggles all season on the road, particularly on the weekend. The Aeros are 1-8-2-1 away from Toyota Center on Saturdays and 1-10-2-2 overall on Saturday and Sunday. The lone Saturday win came December 20 in Cincinnati, a 2-1 decision.
Quick hits
The Aeros haven't yielded a first-period goal in the last eight games dating back to the Milwaukee game on February 26.
Houston hasn't scored a first-period goal in the first period of seven of its last nine road games, and the Aeros have yielded at least one third-period goal in 11 of 12 road games.
Houston leads the league in power play chances at 385, while Norfolk has been shorthanded 346 times, among the top totals in the AHL.
Norfolk's Craig Anderson is 10-5-0 with a 1.54 goals against average at home, compared to 5-11-0 with a 2.34 goals against average (but three shutouts) on the road.
The Admirals are ninth in the league in goals against (2.32 per game) and first in shots against (24.91). Houston, meanwhile, is tied for second in shots per game at 33.70.
Norfolk's minus-14 third period margin (60-46) is the third worst in the AHL.
The Admirals need to score 20 goals in their final 11 games to avoid tying the lowest goal output in AHL history â 172 goals, by Albany in 2001-02. Fortunately for Norfolk, two other teams â Utah and Portland â are both on pace to eclipse that mark.
