Bugs stun Brahmas with third period comeback
December 14, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored three unanswered third period goals to come from behind and defeat the Fort Worth Brahmas 3-1 in a Tuesday morning Central Hockey League game at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The 10:30 a.m. game against the Mudbugs was the Brahmas second annual "Cool School" game. Over 6,500 fourth grade students and faculty members from the Fort Worth ISD were part of the Brahmas season high crowd of 9,142 that watched the game.
After taking the ice to resounding cheers from the enthusiastic crowd, the Brahmas responded with a strong first period of play. Fort Worth outshot Bossier-Shreveport 13-7 in the opening 20 minutes, and scored the only goal of the period when center Bryan Lundbohm deflected home a Chad Woollard shot 6:35 into the period. Lundbohm's goal, a powerplay marker, was his 8th of the season.
Fort Worth continued to carry the play in the second period, outshooting the Mudbugs by a 12-5 margin. The Brahmas, however, could not get anything by Bossier goaltender Ken Carroll, as the Mudbugs veteran netminder kept the visitors in the game.
In the third period, the tide of the game turned. Bossier-Shreveport came out attacking, and their aggression paid off when d-man Matt Nicholson one-timed a blast from the top of the right wing face off circle past Brahmas netminder Dan Murphy 3:46 into the third to tie the game at 1.
The Bugs then produced what proved to be the game winning goal just under four minutes later, at the 7:23 mark of the third, when rookie forward Brett Smith deflected a shot in traffic past Murphy to make the score 2-1.
Fort Worth tried to mount a comeback of their own, but Carroll was defiant in the Bossier net. He stopped all 8 Brahmas shots that he faced in the third period, and kept the Brahmas at bay. A late 5 on 3 powerplay goal by Bossier veteran forward Forbes MacPherson set the final score at 3-1.
Murphy took the loss in net for Fort Worth, allowing the three Bugs goals on 22 shots. Carroll earned the win for the Mudbugs, stopping 32 of the 33 Fort Worth shots he faced in the game.
The loss drops the Brahmas record to 12-6-3 on the season. With the win, the Mudbugs, 11-7-3 for the year, pulled to within two points of the Brahmas for the lead in the CHL's Northeast Division. Bossier will have a chance to move into a first place tie with Fort Worth this Friday night, Dec. 17, when the Brahmas travel east to the Century-Tel Center in Bossier City, Louisiana to play the Mudbugs once again. Friday night's game will be broadcast by the Brahmas on KTFW 1460 AM beginning at 6:50 p.m.
