Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

Urbandale (IA) Yips and woofs will bleed into the usual sound of skates gliding on ice and sticks slapping pucks on February 25th at Buccaneer Arena when the Des Moines Buccaneers and the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa partner for the first Doxie Dash. During the first intermission of the Buccaneers' game against the Sioux City Musketeers that night, dozens of dachshunds will race across the ice in an attempt for prizes and to raise money for the ARL.

Anyone with a dachshund may register to take part in the event by contacting the ARL directly at arl-iowa.org with the entry fee being $10. The entire entry fee will go directly to the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa for use in their efforts to help all animals throughout Iowa. A complete set of rules can be found at both bucshockey.com and arl-iowa.org.

"Teams in the region have allowed fans to bring their pets to games for years and we wanted to do something different" said Buccaneers' VP of Sales and Communications Scott Montesano. "Weiner dog racing has been popular elsewhere and we look forward to having it here in the metro area."

The dogs will race from one end of the ice to other in a single heat with the winner receiving prizes for both the dog and its handlers. Each entrant must have two handlers present on the ice in order to compete.

"This has been done at many minor league hockey games and the ice isn't a problem for the dogs" added Montesano. "The dogs have better balance than the humans."

The Buccaneers (13-19-4) are back in action this week with a game at Dubuque on Wednesday, home against Sioux Falls on Friday and back on the road at Sioux City on Saturday. Friday's home game will feature a free public skate after the game (note that the player's will not be taking part in this skate).

The Des Moines Buccaneers ware playing their 32nd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League beginning in the fall of 2011. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni. Season Ticket Packages and Corporate Partnership information for the 2011-2012 season is available by calling (515) 278-2827.
