Arizona Sundogs News Release
LAREDO, TX - Todd Griffith's blindside elbow near the end of the second period set off a chain of events that resulted in four game misconducts, a match penalty, and a 6-3 win for the Laredo Bucks over the Arizona Sundogs on Wednesday night at Laredo Energy Arena.
Laredo took a 5-3 lead and control of the game 59 seconds into third period after Matt Hanson scored from the slot.
It was a competitive contest through the first 39 minutes of action as both teams traded the goals and the lead. The Sundogs picked up first period goals from Daymen Rycroft and Patrick Schafer. Laredo's first period tallies were by Jason Reese, Ryan Sparling, and Erik Boisvert on the power play.
The Sundogs tied the game at 3-3 with nine minutes to play in period two on a Craig Macdonald slap shot from the left circle. Laredo took their final lead of the game less than four minutes later as Matt Boyd recorded a shorthanded goal.
With 1:02 remaining in the second period, Griffith delivered a blindside elbow to Arizona's Rycroft at center ice that sparked a fight between Laredo's Mark Nebus and Arizona's Corey Toy. Macdonald and Griffith then started a second fight which resulted in game-misconducts for both players. Arizona's Kyle Hood also received a roughing minor.
The second period chaos resulted in 59 total penalty minutes for both teams and 105 minutes for the game.
Adam Rivet added another third period goal for Laredo to seal the 6-3 win.
Hood's point streak came to an end at seven games. The Sundogs also saw their power play goal streak stop at six games. Rycroft's first period goal was the 199th of his career, and Schafer scored in his first game of the season for Arizona.
Scott Reid took the loss with 33 saves for Arizona. Torrie Jung was the winning goaltender, stopping 24.
Arizona was 0-for-2 on the power play. Laredo was 1-for-12.
The Sundogs will close out their five-game road trip this weekend with a pair of contests against Rio Grande Valley. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6:30 PM MST start.
