Bucks take two of three on opening weekend

LAREDO, Texas – The Laredo Bucks took two of three games this past weekend as the 2004-05 CHL regular season opened up. The Bucks dropped a 4-1 decision on Friday in San Angelo. Saturday in their home opener the Bucks beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-2 in front of 8,002 at the LEC. On Sunday the Bucks finished off the weekend with a 6-2 win in Austin. The Bucks are in Rio Grande Valley this Friday, and then return home against San Angelo on Saturday. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. Laredo completes the first weekend of the season in Austin on Sunday. · Saturday night is Halloween Night with the Bucks. Fans are encouraged to wear a costume to the game. The first 3,000 will receive a GOOLIE mask. RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES · This is the first meeting of the year between the teams. The Bucks were 9-2-2 last year against Rio in the regular season, outscoring the Bees 50-29. The Bucks went 4-1-1 at the LEC and 5-1-1 at the Dodge Arena. Laredo swept the Killer Bees three games to none in the first round of the CHL playoffs, outscoring Rio 10-1.   SAN ANGELO SAINTS · This is the second meeting of the year between the Bucks and Saints. San Angelo beat the Bucks 4-1 this past Friday night as goalie Scott Reid stopped 27 of 28 shots. The Bucks were 5-0-1 last year against the Saints outscoring them 27-16 overall. Laredo was 2-0-1 in San Angelo. The Bucks are 9-2-3 all time against the Saints and 4-2-2 in San Angelo.   FRANCHISE RECORD TIED

· Bucks forward Jeff Bes scored five straight goals over the span of two games. Bes recorded a hat trick on Saturday, tallying the final three goals in a 4-2 win over Corpus Christi. Sunday he scored the first two goals in a 6-2 Bucks victory in Austin. With the string of five straight goals, Bes tied a franchise record set by Eric Schneider in the 2002-03 season when Schneider scored the first five goals in Bucks franchise history.   THROW THOSE HATS

· Bucks forward Jeff Bes tallied a hat trick Saturday night against Austin. Bes has four career hat tricks, three have come with Laredo.   DUBIOUS STREAK ENDS

· The Bucks had gone five consecutive regular season games without a win, dating back to the 2003-04 regular season, which was a new franchise record. The Bucks snapped that string with a 4-2 win on Saturday against Corpus Christi.   SEASON OPENERS

· The Bucks are 1-2-0 in regular season openers in the three year history of the franchise. Laredo lost to Corpus 2-1 in Corpus in the 2002-03 opener. The Bucks beat Corpus Christi 5-2 in the 2003-04 season opener in Corpus. Friday night the Bucks lost 4-1 in San Angelo in the 2004-05 season opener.   HOME OPENERS

· The Bucks are 3-0-0 in home openers in franchise history. The Bucks beat Corpus Christi 7-3 in the 2002-03 home opener, powered by forward Eric Schneider who had a hat trick. In the 2003-04 home opener, Laredo beat San Angelo 6-3, forward Steve Simoes had two goals. Laredo beat Corpus Christi 4-2 Saturday in front of 8,002 fans at the LEC as Jeff Bes had a hat trick.   ON THE ROAD

· The Bucks play three of their first four games on the road.   NO REST

· The Bucks began the 2004-05 CHL season with three games in three nights. Friday in San Angelo, Saturday at home versus Corpus Christi and Sunday on the road in Austin. The Bucks will play three games in three nights five total times this year.   BUCKS WEEKLY GAME RECAPS

· 10/24/04 – SUNDAY – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks beat the Austin Ice Bats 6-2 Sunday at the Bat Cave in front of 2,536 fans. After losing the opening game of a three in three weekend the Bucks rallied to win the final two games and improve to 2-1-0 this year and move into a first place tie in the Southeast Division. Forward Jeff Bes recorded a pair of goals to lead the attack. Bucks goalie Jeremy Symington was solid in his Bucks debut as he stopped 21 of 23 shots and is 1-0-0. Austin goalie Peter Brady was beaten for six goals on 28 shots and is 0-1-0.

PP           Laredo     1-5           Austin      1-8   · 10/23/04 – SATURDAY – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks picked up their first win of the year as they captured their home opener with a 4-2 win over the visiting Corpus Christi Rayz in front of a sellout crowd of 8,002 at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Forward Jeff Bes registered a hat trick as the Bucks improved to 1-1-0. Guerrera was terrific as he stopped 32 of 34 shots and evened his record at 1-1-0. Brent Zelenewich was outstanding in the pipes for Corpus, stopping 27 of 31, but took the loss to fall to 0-1-1.

PP           Laredo     1-5           Corpus Christi          1-8   · 10/22/04 – FRIDAY – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks began the 2004-05 CHL regular season with a 4-1 loss in San Angelo. Saints goalie Scott Reid, the 2003-04 CHL Goalie of the Year, showed why as he allowed just one goal and stymied the Bucks all night. Four different Saints scored and Bret DeCecco tallied the game winner at 5:00 of the third period. Reid was brilliant as he stopped 27 of 28 and is 1-0-0. Guerrera stopped 24 of 27, but got the loss to drop to 0-1-0.
