LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks stunned the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees with three unanswered goals, including the game winner in sudden death by defenseman Steve Weidlich to post a 3-2 overtime win in front of 5,234 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Wednesday night. The Bucks swept the Killer Bees three straight games and have now won eight of their last nine. Laredo is 30-11-3 with a Southeast Division and Southern Conference best 63 points. The Bucks travel to Fort Worth on Friday and Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday. Laredo is home again on Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, against the Corpus Christi Rayz. Face off set for 7 p.m. For more information on 2005-06 Bucks single game or season tickets call the Bucks office at (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
The Killer Bees capitalized on an early power play chance. Defenseman Clay Plume fired a shot thru a screen in front at 7:24 to give Rio Grande Valley a 1-0 lead. The teams combined for 31 shots in the first period, with the Killer Bees out shooting the Bucks 17-14.
In the second period the Bucks controlled the flow and out shot Rio Grande Valley 16-10, but were unable to score.
The Killer Bees extended their lead to 2-0 in the third period when forward Bill Newson scored on a power play just 1:16 into the frame. The Bucks answered back when defenseman Serge Dube gunned a shot from the point that was redirected into the net by forward Chris Grenville at 8:15 to cut the margin to one goal. It was the 19th of the year for Grenville. Just over three minutes later the Bucks tied it. Defenseman Adam Rivet cleared the puck up the right side. Forward Steve Simoes hustled the puck down for a breakaway and streaked in and scored his tenth of the season with a wrist shot to tie the game at 2-2 at 11:39. The team traded chances down the stretch, but neither could get the go ahead goal and the game headed to overtime.
In overtime the teams played a full two minutes of three-on-three due to matching minors, but neither team could even muster a shot during the wide open stretch. With less than a minute to go in sudden death Weidlich cut down the left side to the slot and managed to muscle a shot along the ice into the net with just 38.9 seconds left in overtime to win the game. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Rio Grande Valley 2 in sudden death.
Bucks goalie Dov Grumet-Morris turned in a solid effort stopping 37 of 39 shots to get the win and improve to 11-3-1. Evan Lindsay allowed three goals on 45 shots and fell to 16-13-2. The Bucks were 0-4 on the power play while Rio Grande Valley went 2-6. Laredo out shot the Killer Bees 45-39.
