Captains for Courage Game Worn Jersey Auction
February 8, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League, in conjunction its member teams and the Hoffen Foundation, have today announced a charitable effort designed to raise funds for children's charities within each market. At home contests for each CHL club (between February 10th and 25th), each team Captain will wear a Caps For Courage⢠patch. Following the game, each jersey will be autographed by the captain and auctioned off online at centralhockeyleague.com/merchandise/auction. The auction will begin February 10th and run through 5:00 PM CST on Wednesday, March 1st, with all proceeds donated directly to a local market charity as designated by each club. The CHL's Colorado franchise are providing a 2004-2005 Eagles jersey for the auction, worn by captain Greg Pankewicz during the Eagles CHL championship run last season.
The non-profit Hoffen Foundation was established by former CHL linesman and cancer survivor Tim Zemens of Arlington, Texas during the summer of 2003. The name "Hoffen" is German for "hope", and the foundation is dedicated to fundraising events to benefit charitable groups that may cultivate such hope for children throughout the United States and Canada. The Hoffen Foundation has provided donations approaching $20,000.00 across charities in CHL markets during the past two seasons.
The Caps For Courage⢠program was formed during the 2002/2003 season by former Lubbock Cotton King forward Anthony Donskov to benefit the Kelsey Logan Angel Fund, founded in May of 1995 by Pam and Brad Logan to honor the memory of their daughter, Kelsey, who died of cancer at the age of 2½. Donskov was honored as the CHL's Man of the Year in 2003 for his significant efforts, and his program continues to assist needy children via cap purchases and donations through the Hoffen Foundation.
"We thank both our member teams and all 15 club captains for their willingness to participate in this program," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "This is an opportunity for our fans to own a very unique piece of team memorabilia while assisting the highly worthwhile causes in each of our markets."
