Laredo Bucks News Release

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Laredo Bucks have had a terrific season because different players have risen to the occasion night in and night out all year. Friday night in Lubbock it was forward Bobby Chad Mitchell's turn as he backhanded home a rebound with less than two minutes to play in regulation time to give the Bucks a 3-2 win in Lubbock over the Cotton Kings. The Bucks are now 38-5-4 with a Southeast Division and CHL best 80 points.

The Bucks travel farther up the Texas panhandle as tomorrow night they are in Amarillo. Laredo returns home on Wednesday, February 11th, against the Fort Worth Brahmas in an 11 a.m. game at the LEC. Call (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) for tickets or more information or go online at www.laredobucks.com.

Early on the Cotton Kings came out hitting trying to set the tone for a physical game. At 8:48 forward Anders Strome swooped down the left side, turned the corner on the Bucks defense then forehanded the puck by Laredo goalie Marco Emond for a 1-0 Lubbock lead. The Cotton Kings out shot the Bucks 10-6 in the first.

In the second period the Bucks finally got it going. Just over the halfway point of the game Bucks forward Chris Grenville teed up a rocket from the bottom of the left circle that ripped thru Cotton Kings goalie Jeremy Symington and into the net at 10:04. With the shot Grenville picked up his first of the night and extended his goal scoring streak to five straight games. Later in the period the Bucks went on the power play and they went right back to Grenville. Defenseman Serge Dube passed the puck to the top of the left circle and Grenville teed up another missile that went in low glove side at 15:54 for a 2-1 Laredo lead. Grenville leads the CHL with 33 goals.

The Cotton Kings tied the game early into the third when defenseman Vinnie Jonasson scored on a wrist shot from the slot at 3:13 to even the game at two. Late in the period with time ticking done an unlikely Buck stepped up. Forward Max Birbraer fired a shot from the left point that Symington stopped, but Mitchell picked up the rebound and backhanded it top shelf with just 1:58 to play in the game. It was Mitchell's third of the year and his second versus Lubbock. The Bucks held off the Cotton Kings and held on for the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Lubbock 2.

Emond stopped 29 of 31 to get the win and improve to 16-2-2. Symington allowed three goals on 27 shots to fall to 7-14-6. The Bucks were 1-6 on the power play while Lubbock was 0-4.
