Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Laredo, Texas - The Fort Worth Brahmas came up just short on Saturday night, falling to the 4-3 to the top team in the Southern Conference, the Laredo Bucks.
The game was a see-saw affair from the outset. The Brahmas scored the first goal of the game at the 6:06 mark of the first period when rookie forward Beau McLaughlin found the back of the net. Fort Worth would protect their 1-0 lead for the duration of the first period.
Laredo tied the game just 18 seconds into the second period when Steve Simoes scored. Neither team would score again until the final minute of the middle period. Just 42 seconds before the second intermission, the Bucks went ahead 2-1 on a powerplay goal from defenseman Phillip Lauze.
The Bucks extended their lead to 3-1 on a Ladislav Kouba marker 3:59 into the third. The resilient Brahmas bounced back, pulling to within 3-2 when center Cory Stillman scored a powerplay goal of his own at the 6:57 mark of the third.
Laredo center Brent Cullaton answered Stillman's score with another Bucks goal. Cullaton scored at the 14:53 mark of the third to push the Laredo lead to 4-2.
With his team down two goals, Fort Worth head coach Guy Larose pulled Brahmas goaltender Larry Sterling for an extra attacker in the final minutes of the game. The strategy worked, as Stillman delivered another goal for the Brahmas with just 36 seconds left in regulation. Laredo, however, remain composed, and they carefully controlled the puck in the waning seconds of the game, not allowing the Brahmas an opportunity to score the tying goal.
The loss by the Brahmas spoiled an outstanding performance from Sterling. The second-year pro from Lake Orion, Michigan stopped 35 of the 39 Bucks shots he faced in the game. Laredo netminder David Lemanowicz turned away 15 of the 18 Fort Worth shots sent his way.
The Brahmas are now 12-21-5 for the year. Fort Worth remains in a third place tie in the Northeast Division with the Memphis RiverKings. The Brahmas will next be in action on Friday, January 27, when they travel to Austin to face the Ice Bats at 7:30 p.m. at the Travis County Expo Center.
BRAHMAS ROSTER MOVES:
Injuries forced the Brahmas to make a handful of roster moves prior to Saturday night's game against the Bucks. Forward Derek Seal was hurt in the Brahmas 4-1 loss to Rio Grande Valley on Friday night. Seal was placed on the 14-day injured reserve list. Also placed on the 14-day injured reserve list by the Brahmas was forward Ty Hennes. Hennes, who has not played since January 6, could return to action next weekend.
Fort Worth filled a roster spot with the signing of rookie forward Noah Katz. Katz began this season in the training camp with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. He then played 8 games earlier this year with the Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL. Before turning pro, Katz played three years of collegiate hockey at two NCAA Division III schools, Union College and Concordia College. Katz made his Brahmas debut, wearing #44, in Fort Worth's loss to Laredo.
