Bruins Squeaked in a Shootout Again

November 11, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release

The shootout has not been a friend of the Austin Bruins (9-4-6) this season. For the fourth time this season, the Bruins fell short of a victory in a skills competition, this time a 3-2 loss to the Janesville Jets (13-5-1) Tuesday at Riverside Arena in Austin in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Janesville had the better of the scoring chances in the early-going, but were turned away each time by Austin rookie goalie Zach Driscoll (Apple Valley, MN - St. Cloud State). Driscoll was run into two or three times in the period, but kept his cool and kept the puck out of the net. The best scoring chance of the period came when Bruins forward Pat Lauderdale (Eden Prairie, MN) snuck behind the Jets defense, but was stopped on a long breakaway by Janesville goalie Matt Jurusik (La Grange, IL).

The Bruins played a much better second period, peppering Jurusik with 12 shots and sustaining pressure in the offensive zone on several shifts. Saturday s overtime hero Ian Scheid (Coon Rapids, MN) broke a scoreless tie at 17:02 of the second on a wicked wrist shot from the right circle.

Brandon Schultz (Fort Myers, FL), the Jets leading scorer tied the game early in the third, and captain Drew Callin (Middletown, WI) gave Janesville its first lead at 14:10. One minute and 23 seconds later, Zach Kennedy (Eagle River, WI) deflected a Hugo Gallet (Amiens, France) shot past Jurusik to tie the game and force overtime.

After a wild five minutes of a scoreless overtime will several near game-winners, Janesville out-scored Austin 3-1 in the skills competition to grab the two points and the victory. The Bruins are now 0-4 in shootouts this season, and 1-6 in games decided after regulation. Driscoll stopped 26 shots in the loss and Jurusik finished with 27 saves in his eighth win.

The two teams will play twice more this weekend, as the Bruins travel to Janesville for the first time ever Friday. Both games start at 7pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com, with coverage starting at 6:50.
