Chilliwack Bruins News Release

The Chilliwack Bruins and Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation are pleased to announce the official launching of a 10-year partnership. The goal of the partnership is to raise funds to support A Campaign for Health Care Excellence as well as future needs at Chilliwack General Hospital.

Over the ten years, the Bruins are committed to raising the sum of $250,000 for the hospital.

The Bruins are being recognized for this leadership gift to the campaign with the official naming of an integral part of the expansion and redevelopment of Chilliwack General Hospital. As part of the Ambulatory Care Department, a special area or 'pod' for pediatric outpatient services is being created. This 'pod' will be housed in the new Bruins Pediatric Centre and will offer clinics for programs such as Juvenile Diabetes, Childhood Obesity and Childhood Asthma.

"The Chilliwack Bruins Hockey Club is extremely committed to supporting children and youth in our community," states Bruins President Darryl Porter. "To this end, we have joined the Foundation in a 10-year partnership to support A Campaign for Health Care Excellence as well as future needs at Chilliwack General Hospital. We're also pleased to announce the involvement of our alumni association with this fund raising effort. Our alumni, which includes members of the original Chilliwack Bruins club that called Chilliwack home during the 1970's as well as graduates of our hockey club, will begin their fund raising for this project with a golf tournament on August 25th."

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, created in 2000, is the charitable organization which raises funds and accepts donations to support health care facilities and programs within the Fraser Valley Regional District.

The Chilliwack Chapter, chaired by councillor, Mel Folkman, is a local branch of the Foundation which focuses specifically on raising funds to support health care services within the community of Chilliwack.

The Foundation/Chapter's "A Campaign for Health Care Excellence" is currently underway to raise $5 million towards the expansion and redevelopment of Chilliwack General Hospital. This project includes the building of a brand new Emergency Department and the relocation/reorganization of Ambulatory Care, Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging services. Many community leaders have seen the importance of this campaign and have responded with amazing generosity. $3.1 million has already been raised through the hard work and dedication of our volunteer team, led by Campaign Chair, Etta Richmond.

"The very enthusiastic and generous involvement of the Bruins Management, Alumni and Players in this campaign is a wonderful example of leadership for others to follow," stated Richmond. "The campaign committee is very thankful for this commitment and look forward to working with the Bruins on a long term relationship. We all know that children and youth need appropriate space when they are in a medical setting and the Bruins Pediatric Centre will serve the youngest members of our community well."
