A late short-handed goal from rookie Sam Kauppila (Leainee, IL) broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Austin Bruins (9-1-0) to a 4-1 victory Friday night over the Aberdeen Wings (7-3-1) at the Odde Ice Center in Aberdeen.
The Bruins temporarily quieted the Aberdeen crowd with an early first period goal by Josh Bretner (N. Potomac, MD) at the tail-end of a power-play. The goal was the captain s first of the season. Austin s penalty killers also were called upon in the opening frame, successfully killing off two Wings power-plays to keep the Bruins in front at the first break.
While the first period saw lots of end-to-end action and a fast-flowing pace, the second period was much different. Tempers flared in the final minutes of what turned out to be a scoreless middle stanza, when Austin s Brennan Sanford (Holt, MI) was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for showering the Wings goalie Chad Catt (Williamstown, MI).
The penalty carried over into the first minute of the third, but the Bruins penalty kill did their job again to keep the lead. However, minutes later, Drew Doyon (Carmel, IN) scored for the Wings at even-strength to tie the game at 1-1. Austin took a late penalty with the game tied, when Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) was called for boarding, but Kauppila picked up his own rebound and narrowly beat Catt short-handed with 4:32 left to put the Bruins up for good.
Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) added an even strength goal for some insurance with 2:23 remaining in the game, and Bretner finished off the scoring with an empty netter to complete Austin s 4-1 win. Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) stopped 40 of Aberdeen s 41 shots for his eighth win of the year, as the Bruins outshot the Wings 45-41.
