Bruins come back from down 0-3, win convincingly over Magicians
December 5, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
For 25 minutes Friday night, it looked like the Austin Bruins (13-7-7) were going to be run out of the Richfield Arena by the hometown Minnesota Magicians (11-16-0). But trailing 3-0, the Bruins flicked a switch and throughly manhandled the Magicians the rest of the way, winning 7-3 for their third consecutive win.
A sloppy start forced the Bruins to play from behind, as Minnesota scored the only two goals of the first period. With a 5-1 shots advantage, Denis Shevyrin (Krefeld, Germany) appeared like he was going behind the Bruins net for a wraparound but spun a pass back to the opposite post for an easy Matt Colford (Champlin, MN) tap-in, fooling both the Bruins defensemen and goalie Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) for the game s first goal.
Kane Durment (Kildeer, IL) sniped a wrist shot under the crossbar at 6:54 to make it 2-0, and the Magicians led by that score after one period. Minnesota outshot Austin 11-5 in the period. Lukas Laub (Rosenheim, Germany), broke free on a breakaway and beat Kielly on a backhand through the five-hole to make it 3-0 Magicians early in the second. Then the tables turned.
Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) scored the first Bruins goal on a toe-drag wrist shot from high in the slot at 5:33 of the middle period. Then on a 4-on-4 situation, Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) and Liam Feeney (Foxboro, MA) picked up back-to-back goals to tie the game with 8:24 left in the frame. Alex Pettersson (Ockero, Sweden) scored the fourth goal in less than nine minutes to give the Bruins their first lead at 14:29, when he snapped a one-timer past Minnesota starting goalie Cole Weaver (Champlin, MN).
With Austin in front 4-3 to start the third, Boyd added his second of the night on a goal-mouth scramble to chase Weaver from the game for backup Chris Amsden (St. Peter, MN). Boyd completed his first-career hat trick at 10:31 of the period to open the lead to 6-3, and added an assist nine seconds later on a centering feed for former Magician Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN). Kielly stopped 25 shots in the win, and Dietsch added four assists on a night his line was unstoppable.
Saturday night, the Bruins get another crack at the Minnesota Wilderness, who make their first trip to Austin this season. The puck drops at 7:05pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com or heard on 1410AM KAUS, with coverage starting at 6:55.
