Blankenburg Blanks Warriors, Ice Miners Win Fourth

CONNELLSVILLE, PA - One goal in each period and a stellar performance from Alex Blankenburg propelled the Ice Mines to their fourth straight win Friday night at the Ice Mine in a 3-0 final score over the Michigan Warriors.

The Ice Miners got off to a fast start, scroing 24 seconds into the first period when Taylor Fernandez tried to find Matt Jones on the doorstep. The puck deflected off Warriors netminder Ryan Wischow and in behind him for a 1-0 Keystone lead. Alex Archibald and Lordanthony Grissom assisted on the goal as Fernandez extended his point streak to six games. The score was 1-0 through one period.

The "Pittsburgh line" found the back of the net in the second period when Tommy Horn finished off a pretty passing play, courtesy of brothers A.J. and Jacob Coleman. The goal was Horn's second as an Ice Miner and third of the season, coming at 17:51 of the 2nd period.

Leading 2-0 into the third, Blankenburg shut the door, stopping all 33 Michigan shots, including two stand-out glove saves. Matt Jones added an empty netter with just under one minute remaining to seal the 3-0 victory. Jones has scored a goal in three straight games. It was Blankenburg's seventh win and first shutout of the season. The Ice Miners improved to 12-10-3, moving within four points of the second place Soo Eagles.

The Ice Miners and Warriors will play again on Saturday night at 7:30 at the Ice Mine. Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to partcipate in a "teddy bear toss" after the Ice Miners score their first goal. All stuffed animals will be donated to Connellsville Area Community Ministries.
