Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â Swamp Foxes' captains Michael Brown and Johnny Turman have been selected as the Players of the Week by both the front office and Fox Hole Fan Club, the team announced today. Brown earned the honors from the team, while Turman becomes the first quarterback selected by the fan club to win its weekly honor.
Part of the strength of the Swamp Foxes top-rated defense lies in the play of defensive specialist Michael Brown. The three-year veteran anchored the Foxes "D" that held the Richmond Speed to six, second half points in a pivotal divisional match-up this past Saturday.
In the win, Brown tallied five tackles, including one for a three-yard loss. He also forced three fumbles, while recovering another. Holding a slim six-point lead midway through the third quarter, Brown thwarted a Speed drive, tallying his fourth interception of the season, out battling Richmond's Damon Thompson for a ball in the end zone. Brown ranks as the Swamp Foxes' all-time leading defender currently with 130 career tackles, and ranks as the Foxes career interceptions leader with 20 picks.
For the second-consecutive week, Turman have been selected as one of the two weekly award winners. The reigning af2 Offensive Player of the Week picked up where he left off one week prior. The rookie signal caller completed 20-of-38 passes for 325 yards, a Swamp Foxes single-game record for passing yards. Turman surpassed three-year starter Ray Isaac, Jr. on the single-game list, topping Isaac's 296 yards set in 2001.
Turman spread the ball around as six different receivers tallied receptions, five of which totaled 50 or more yards receiving on the night. Turman tossed five touchdown passes as the Swamp Foxes extended their winning streak to two and moved into second place in the American Conference's Atlantic Division.
Brown and Turman both edged out the sentimental favorite, wide receiver/defensive back Joe Judge. The rookie caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. His heroics on defense, however, are just as note-worthy. Judge tallied eight tackles on the night, as well as forcing and recovering a fumble in the 52-29 win. Judge was injured on the final play from scrimmage, having to be taken from the field on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital. X-rays that night came up negative and Judge returned to Charleston with the team.
The Swamp Foxes return to action this Saturday night as they play host to the Macon Knights at a special start time of 6:00 pm at the North Charleston Coliseum. The tailgate zone starts at 3:30 pm with live music from the bluegrass group, "Common Ground." Following the exciting Arena Football game, the Swamp Foxes are proud to present six-time Dove Award winner, Christian music recording artist Jaci Velasquez live in concert.
Tickets for the day of activities are on sale now at the coliseum box office, ticketmaster.com, or by phone at (843) 554-6060. Group rates are available by calling the Swamp Foxes' office at (843) 554-4321.
