af2 Names Week's Top Players

June 17, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Florida quarterback KEN MASTROLE, Birmingham offensive/defensive lineman WILLIAM MAYES and Arkansas defensive specialist KAHLIL CARTER have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 11 of the 2003 season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mastrole (6-3, 245, Rhode Island), in his second season, engineered an offensive effort not seen from the Firecats since 2001 as Florida topped Macon 60-49 and moved to 5-5 on the season. Playing in his fifth game since taking over for the injured BRYAN SPARACINO, Mastrole completed 23-of-31 passes for 318 yards and a team-record eight touchdowns with no interceptions. The Firecats broke the 60-point mark for only the second time in history, with the other instance occurring on June 2, 2001 when the 'Cats beat the Baton Rouge Blaze 68-62. Mastrole is the seventh QB to throw for eight touchdowns in a single game this season. This is the first weekly award of his career and the second for the Firecats this season.

IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Mayes (6-3, 275, Louisiana Tech), in his third season, is a big lineman who made a big all-around impact in the Steeldogs 51-36 dismantling of Memphis on Saturday night. The veteran pass-rusher tallied a team record three sacks for a total of 22 lost yards and he made three solo tackles. In true Ironman spirit, Mayes also found himself on the receiving end of a three-yard touchdown pass, helping the Steeldogs increase its lead to 20-6 in the first half. As mentioned above, Mayes matched a team record with his three sacks, a record he set back in the 2001 season. Mayes' three sacks also moved him past JERRY TURNER for the most sacks in Steeldogs' history. Mayes now has 14.5 for his career. Mayes is a first-time Ironman of the Week winner, but he is the third Steeldog to be honored with a weekly accolade this season.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Carter (6-2, 195, Arkansas), in his fourth season, captained the best defensive effort of the season for the Twisters in its 47-21 win over Bossier City on Friday night. Leading his team with four solo tackles and six passes defended, Carter also made three interceptions that he returned for a total of 88 yards. He took one of those picks back for a 49-yard score that helped the Twisters pad its lead in the fourth quarter. Carter is now the league leader in passes defended with 32 for the season and he leads his team with seven interceptions. This is Carter's first weekly mention of his career and he is the second Twister to win an award this season.
