Broncos Win Series Against Edinburg in Extra Innings

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos got on a great pitching performance by starter Gregorio Martinez, but needed 10 innings to pick up the 4-3 victory on Sunday Night at Veterans Field. The Broncos continue on this 6 game home stand on Monday Night with the beginning of a 3 game series against the Harlingen WhiteWings. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez had retired 7 straight batters to start the game before running into trouble in the top of the 3rd inning. With one out Jason Arrowood and Nick Aranda would hit back to back single. Then Angelo Fermin would double into left field scoring Arrowood from 2nd and moving Aranda to 3rd base. Gary Roche would then reach base on an error by 2nd baseman Eric Padilla allowing both runners to score and giving the Coyotes an early 3-0 lead.

Coyotes starter Aaron Guerra had only given up one hit to the Broncos before the offense got going for Laredo in the bottom of the 5th. Santiago Guerrero led off with a bunt single and then went to 3rd on a double by Matt Lawman. With one out Eric Padilla reached base on a throwing error by 3rd baseman Eric Gonzalez. Guerrero would have scored on the ground out by the error allowed Lawman to score and Padilla to go to 2nd. Anthony Bennett would then single moving Padilla to 3rd base. Dwayne White would follow with a single of his own scoring Padilla to tie the game at 3-3.

Edinburg's starter Aaron Guerra would be done after going 7 innings and leaving with a no decision. He gave up 3 runs with only 1 earned. He gave up 6 hits, walked none, and struck out 6. Luke Prihoda would come in and replace Guerra in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Gregorio Martinez would pitch 9 innings for the Broncos giving up 3 runs 2 of which were earned. He gave up 3 hits, walked 1 and struck out a season high 14 batters. He kept the game tied as Laredo came up in the bottom of the 9th.

The Broncos would threaten in the bottom of the 9th inning. Santiago Guerrero would get hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then steal 2nd. Matt Lawman would then reach base on a error by 3rd baseman Eric Gonzalez to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out. Ivan Reyes would try to sacrifice bunt the runners over by his bunt was not successful as Guerrero was forced out at 3rd. Then Eric Padilla hit a little blooper into right field that was caught. Lawman thought the ball was going to drop and he was doubled off of 2nd to end the threat, sending the Broncos and Coyotes into extra innings for the 2nd straight extra inning game with the score tied at 3.

David Watkins would start off the 10th inning and get the 1st batter to line out. Then after a one out walk he left the game with some sort of injury and Dan Sausville came into the game. He would get the two men he faced to keep the game tied at 3 heading into the bottom of the 10th.

Anthony Bennett would lead off the 9th inning with a walk and then go to 2nd on an infield single by Dwayne White against reliever Bric Steed. Steed would then strike out Arnoldo Ponce and get Luany Sanchez to fly out. But Jose Salas would hit a walk off single scoring Bennett from 2nd to give the Broncos a 4-3 victory.

The Broncos had 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 errors, while the Coyotes had 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors.

The Broncos improve to 10-8 on the season . The Broncos will be back in action on Monday night at Veterans Field for the start of a 3 game set against the Harlingen WhiteWings at 7:30. It is kids night at the ballpark where all kids 12 and under will receive a free admission for every paid adult admission.
