Laredo Broncos News Release

The Broncos (15-24) recorded only one hit in the final three innings in game one of a scheduled double header between with the Thunder (14-24) and lost in walk off fashion when Brian Nichols hit a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

The Thunder took a 1-0 lead over the Bronco starter RHP Jeff Jamnik (0-1) in the bottom of the first when Levy Ventura singled and Brian Nichols knocked him in with a double.

The Broncos tied the game at 1-1 against the Thunder starter RHP Jared Sutton (0-2) when Ryan Flynn hit an RBI double and brought home Kenny Gilbert in the top of the second.

The Broncos took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third after Jason Diaz led off the inning with a double and stole third base; his 21st stolen base of the year. Kenny Gilbert then brought Diaz home with a single. Salvador Paniagua, the newest member of the Broncos acquired in a trade that sent catcher Luany Sanchez to the Rio Grande Valley White Wings late last night, was hit by a pitch. Jonathan Cisneros then singled and Nick Mahin picked up his 20th RBI with a sacrifice fly.

The Thunder added a run in the bottom of the fourth against Jamnik when Brian Nichols doubled and Lamar Guy brought Nichols home with a single.

The momentum swing was almost complete when the Thunder tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Goss singled to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Ron Fenwick, Brian Nichols picked up his 30th RBI of the season with a single; 3-3 the score.

The Broncos only sent ten men to the plate in the final three innings of the game and went in order in the top of the seventh to set up the walk off win by the Thunder.

RHP Matt Gibbs (1-1) entered the game with one out in the seventh and allowed a single to Levy Ventura. Up stepped Brian Nichols, you guessed it, a walk off two run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Thunder the win.

Nichols went 4-4 with two doubles, a single and a home run, he scored a run and knocked in four when it was all over.

Jamnik, making his second start of the season, pitched well for the Broncos. He threw 5.2 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs, while walking none and striking out two.
