Brockton Rox Champions With Sweep Over Spirit

3,610 loyal fans came out in support of the Wildcard Brockton Rox and witnessed the first ever professional baseball championship in the "City of Champions with a 4-1 victory over the North Shore Spirit. The Rox become only the second wildcard team to ever to go on to win the championship (New Jersey Jackals '01).

The Rox sprung out of the gates in the first inning. Abner Arroyo delivered a one-out double and scored his ninth run of the post-season on an RBI single by Jake Daubert.

North Shore mounted a comeback in top of the third off of southpaw Scott Martin. Martin, who had been perfect through the first two, gave up a lead-off home run to Fran Riordan evening the score at 1-1.

That was the only mistake the Rox All-Star would make, Martin tossed 6 2/3 innings of four hit ball and struck out six. He received a standing ovation when replaced, recorded his first career playoff win and won a championship all in the same game.

The Rox took the lead for good in the fourth. After a Craig Lewis infield single and error on Yuri Sanchez allowed Lewis to reach second, Francisco Matos smashed a clutch RBI double off of Klae Calvert giving the Rox a 2-1 lead.

The Brockton bats would add two solo-home runs for insurance off the bats of Nestor Smith and Craig Lewis. Three of the four runs the Rox scored were with two-outs, for the series 15 of the 27 runs scored by Brockton came with two-outs.

All-Star Conor Brooks and Tony Stutz closed the door on the Spirit with 2 1/3 innings of perfect baseball.

Francisco Matos was named the 2003 Northeast League MVP for the Championship Series. Matos went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Abner Arroyo scored his ninth run of the playoffs in the first inning and finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Craig Lewis was the catalyst to the Rox offense with a 2-for-3 night. Lewis clubbed a home run scored two runs and had 1 RBI.

The Brockton Rox have a celebration planned that commences at 4 PM tomorrow, September 12, at Campanelli Stadium.
