Brigade players vie for postseason awards
May 10, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release
As the Kansas City Brigade Inaugural season comes to a close, some players look to be recognized for the 2006 AFL Awards. Many Brigade players, by the numbers they put up and their overall performance on the field, deserve consideration for postseason honors. The league hands out 11 individual awards and recognizes All-Arena first and second teams, as well as All-Rookie and All-Ironman teams.
Individual awards include offensive and defensive players of the year, as well as Ironman, coach, kicker, lineman and rookie of the year. BJ Cohen, James Jordan and Byron Douzart will garner interest for Ironman of the Year. Cohen along with fellow linemen Cyron Brown and Gillis Wilson, will also receive interest for lineman of the year. The Brigade has four solid Rookie of the Year candidates: Jerel Myers, Aaron Boone, Travis Coleman and Byron Douzart.
The other individual awards recognize accomplishments off the field. Chris Morant has been nominated for the Al Lucas Hero Award for contributions to the community and to the game of Arena Football. Executive of the year, the Founder's Award and the Commissioner's Award round out the individual honors.
A collection of Brigade players could find themselves on one of the All-league teams. Each All-Arena team is composed of a quarterback, fullback/linebacker, three offensive/defensive linemen, a wide receiver/linebacker and wide receiver/defensive back, an offensive specialist, two defensive specialists and a kicker. Cohen, Brown and Wilson will certainly receive consideration, as will Jerel Myers and James Jordan at WR/LB and Byron Douzart at FB/LB.
The Brigade's collection of four outstanding rookies-Myers, Boone, Coleman and Douzart-will be part of the conversation for the All-Rookie team. Jordan, Douzart and Cohen (who has twice been named to the All-AFL team and was a preseason choice this year) will also get a serious look for the All-Ironman team.
All of the players stats and accomplishments may be found on www.kcbrigade.com in the game notes and in the end of season post-season guide (which will be uploaded next week).
