Kansas City Brigade News Release
Long Island, NY - Jason Willis had six catches for 59 yards and four touchdowns to lead the New York Dragons (1-1) to victory over the Kansas City Brigade (0-2) 50-47 inside of Nassau Coliseum.
Backup quarterback Rohan Davey, who was thrust into action last week when veteran quarterback Aaron Garcia went down with a knee injury led the way for the Dragons who improved to 3-0 all-time versus the Brigade. Davey was 22-of-36 for 233 yards and threw six touchdowns. Davey struggled early by throwing two interceptions in the first half. The first interception went to former New York Dragon Will Holder. However, Davey got hot when it counted and threw three of his six touchdowns in the last quarter of play. Davey added touchdown passes to Keron Henry and Chris Anthony. Levy Brown led the way for the Dragon defense with six and a half tackles and two interceptions. Brown's second interception ended the game when he cut in front of Brigade receiver Jerel Myers in the end zone.
The Kansas City Brigade made their third trip to Long Island in as many years to face the Dragons in front of 10,524 fans. The results were the same as the first two trips, a deflating loss. Quarterback John Fitzgerald led the way for the Brigade with seven total touchdowns; this is Fitzgerald's second straight week to produce seven scores. Fitzgerald was 22-of-37 for 238 yards and four passing touchdowns. The six year veteran also added three touchdowns on the ground. Former Dragon, Mike Horacek hauled in two touchdown passes as he returned to Long Island for the first time since signing with the Brigade. Jerel Myers added 100 receiving yards on the day with one touchdown. 2007 Rookie of the year, Charles Frederick, recorded one touchdown and totaled five tackles as he was forced onto the defensive side of the ball due to several injuries to Brigade defensive starters. Monty Montgomery led the team in tackles for the second straight week with 12 total tackles.
In a back and forth game that saw ten lead changes, the Brigade still had a chance to win the game on the final play. Jerel Myers found himself behind the Dragon defense but QB John Fitzgerald's desperation pass fell into the hands of Dragon DB Levy Brown as time expired. Once again Fitzgerald put up points but his turnovers were the difference in the game. With 2:53 left in the third quarter Fitzgerald mishandled the snap from center Chris Cook and Dragon DB John Walker scooped up the ball and trotted into the end zone for a touchdown. On the day Fitzgerald had three turnovers. This was the second game in a row where the Brigade had a last second chance to pull out the victory. Kicker Peter Martinez, who missed a game winning field goal last week versus Tampa Bay, struggled again this week. Martinez was 3-of-6 on his extra points and missed his only field goal attempt. The Brigades missed opportunities and turnovers proved to be too much to overcome. The Brigade are 0-2 for the second time in franchise history.
The Brigade head into the bye week still looking for their first win of the 2008 AFL season, they will resume play on March 24 when the Grand Rapids Rampage head to Kansas City. The New York Dragons travel to the city of brotherly love to face the Philadelphia Soul on March 16th. Dragon vs. Soul kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 ET.
