Bridgeport pounds out ten hits in loss, Van Stratten extends both streaks

(Bridgeport, Conn. - May 12, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (8-8) dropped the opener of a three-game set 5-2 to the Long Island Ducks (10-8) at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, New York on a gorgeous Tuesday night for baseball.

With the game scoreless in the bottom half of the third inning, Bryan Sabatella and Prentice Redman drew back to back walks. Lew Ford then launched a three-run home run to left field, giving Long Island the early 3-0 lead. Jose Morales made it a four-run inning for the home team, when his RBI single brought home Cody Puckett to make it 4-0 in favor of the flock. Ford added to the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI double, scoring Dan Lyons to make it 5-0 Ducks. Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (1-2) was tagged with the loss, pitching five innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, walking three and striking out one.

The 'Fish scored their first run of the night in the top half of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ildemaro Vargas, scoring Ryan Babineau who reached on a single, to cut the deficit to 5-1. Bridgeport added a run in the top half of the sixth inning as well, after Sean Burroughs singled and Welington Dotel doubled to put runners at first and second and nobody out. Burroughs would later score on a sacrifice fly by Andres Rodriguez, making it 5-2 in favor of Long Island. Both runs were charged to starting pitcher John Brownell (3-1) who earned the victory pitching seven strong innings, giving up six hits and two runs, walking one and striking out four. With two out and nobody on in the top half of the ninth inning, Vargas reached on a single, and Nick Van Stratten proceeded to single as well, extending his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 13 games. With Burroughs up representing the tying run, Ryan Kussmaul was able to close the game out, inducing Burroughs to ground out to shortstop Dan Lyons on the tenth pitch of the at bat. Kussmaul earned his league-leading sixth save. Burroughs and Vargas each had three hits to lead the way for the Bluefish.

Bridgeport plays the middle game of the three game series against the Ducks Wednesday night, May 13th at Bethpage Ballpark at 6:35 p.m. The 'Fish return home to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, May 15th when they host the Camden Riversharks in a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
