Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Michael Sandle and Jordan Brewer delivered two big swings in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (42-52) walked off on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (47-48) with a 5-4 victory on Saturday night at Segra Stadium. After Myrtle Beach took a 4-0 lead, the Woodpeckers kept the Pelicans hitless over the final five innings and scored five unanswered runs to take the upperhand in the series.
In the top of the first, Myrtle Beach loaded up the bases on Carlos Calderon with a leadoff single and back-to-back walks. After a visit on the mound, Calderon struck out the side to escape the bases loaded jam. The Pelicans broke through against Calderon in the third when Yohendrick Pinango scored on a wild pitch to take the 1-0 lead. With Jordan Nwogu standing on third, Peter Matt bounced a pitch towards the mound that resulted in a close play at the plate. Calderon threw to catcher Miguel Palma in time, but Nwogu's slide knocked the ball loose to make it 2-0.
The Pelicans extended the lead in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles from Jonathan Sierra and Jacob Wetzel that made it 4-0. Fayetteville native D.J. Herz made his first pro start in Fayetteville and impressed on the mound for Myrtle Beach. He kept the Woodpeckers off the board through four innings of work with a season high 10 strikeouts.
Chayce McDermott made his Woodpeckers debut in the sixth inning and retired the side in order with two strikeouts. Fayetteville scratched across their first run of the night in the bottom of the sixth, when Justin Williams roped an RBI double into center field to cut the deficit to 4-1. Nerio Rodriguez singled home Williams to make it a two-run game at 4-2.
McDermott continued his outing with a strikeout in the seventh, and struck out the side in the eighth, finishing his debut with six strikeouts, no hits and no earned runs. Rodriguez came through again in the eighth off of Bailey Reid (L, 4-5) with his second RBI single of the night to inch close at 4-3 .
Carlos Hiraldo (W, 1-0) emerged to pitch the ninth and issued a leadoff walk. He recovered with three straight outs on a groundout and back-to-back flyouts to left field, continuing a stretch of five hitless innings from the bullpen.
Facing Reid in the ninth, Cristian Gonzalez drew a one-out walk. Sandle doubled him home to tie the game at 4-4, and advanced to third on a fielding error by catcher Ethan Hearn. Brewer stepped to the plate and connected with a single that bounced off the glove of Josue Huma and allowed Sandle to score the game-winning run.
The Woodpeckers will look to win the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. E.T. Fayetteville will roll out RHP Elvis Garcia (1-0, 1.00) and Myrtle Beach will counter with RHP Daniel Palencia (0-0, 5.68).
