SALISBURY, MD -Colton Cowser capped off a Shorebirds comeback with a walk-off single in the tenth inning for a 5-4 win against the Fredericksburg Nationals on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
In a contest that was back and forth in the later stages, it was the Shorebirds (53-42) who had the final say over the Nationals (33-62).
The game started off innocently enough as the Shorebirds got a two-run triple from Connor Norby in the third to open the scoring.
The FredNats got on the board in the fourth, as after Junior Martina reached on an error, another error allowed him to come in to score.
In the fifth, Viandel Pena legged out a bunt base hit and Jordy Barley followed with a double to push him to third. After a strikeout, Branden Boissiere scored Pena with a groundout to tie the game at 2-2.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the seventh. John Rhodes singled to start the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. One out later Billy Cook singled to score Rhodes and put the Shorebirds ahead 3-2.
Onix Vega powered the FredNats in front with a two-run homer in the eighth, his third of the season.
Trailing 4-3 going into the last of the ninth, Coby Mayo reached on an error to start the frame before Rhodes ripped a double to tie the game up.
Carlos Del Rosario stranded the bases loaded in the top of the tenth to set the stage for Cowser's heroics in the bottom half. With the automatic runner at second, Reed Trimble singled to put men at the corners with Donta' Williams receiving an intentional walk to load the bases. One out later, Cowser roped a base hit off the wall in right to win the game 5-4 for the Shorebirds.
Del Rosario (2-0) earned the win for Delmarva after throwing a scoreless tenth, walking two batters.
Tomas Alastre (2-3) suffered the defeat for the FredNats, as he was charged with an unearned run for the automatic runner while giving up two hits and a walk.
The Shorebirds go for the clean series sweep against the FredNats on Sunday, August 22. Ty Blach (0-0, 0.00) goes for the Shorebirds against Karlo Seijas (3-11, 6.32) for the Nationals. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. with pregame coverage starting at 4:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
