Erie Otters News Release
Owen Sound, Ontario - The first weekend of the final month of the year would also ring in the final trip to Owen Sound for the Erie Otters in the 2023-24 season. After going to overtime against the league-leader and divisional foes of Kitchener on Wednesday night, Erie would look to continue its climb up the Midwest Division standings going against an inconsistent Attack team. Erie picked up its first point of the season back on October 7 in Owen Sound - an overtime loss at the Bayshore Community Centre. Saturday night's battle would be the first meeting between the two Western Conference foes since.
A low-shooting start to the game would see just five shots in the opening six minutes - including just one for the Erie Otters. The fourth shot for the Owen Sound Attack, coming from Sam Sedley (6) would put the Attack on the board just 5:01 in. From there, Erie would takeover nearly the rest of the frame, responding just over two minutes later from Pano Fimis (8) on a second-chance shot. As Erie would begin to double up the Attack in shots 14-7, they would take their first lead of the evening from Martin Misiak to Ondrej Molnar (8) with just over three minutes remaining - leading to Brett Bressette's 100th career OHL point.. A late power play for the Attack would lead to a heartbreaking close to the frame, as Taos Jordan (1, PPG) would beat the buzzer for a tying-goal with 0.42 seconds left. Erie would hold a 14-10 shot advantage in a 2-2 game.
The momentum gained by the Attack from the end of period one buzzer beater would power the Owen Sound Attack into the second period, as the home team would net the puck three more times in the middle 20. After closing the first period, Taos Jordan (2, PPG) would open the second period one scoring with another goal on the man-advantage. 2:04 later, Cedrick Guindon (14) would continue the offensive success for the Attack, and the cherry on top for Owen Sound in the frame would come from Ben Cormier (8) with under four minutes left. Erie would outshoot the Attack 14-8 in the frame, but trail 5-2 in the game.
Erie would fight to a tough finish in the final frame, refusing to go away quietly. While it would take over 12 minutes to get on the board, Pano Fimis (9, PPG) would score Erie's first man-advantage goal of the night to make it a two-goal game. Just :34 later, Erie's comeback hopes would immediately be dashed as Cedrick Guindon (15) would net his second of the night. Erie would get a late heartbeat in the game as Martin Misiak (11, PPG) would bring it back down to two with over 90 seconds left, but the Attack would put the game on ice with an ENG from Ethan Burroughs (10). Erie would fall in the contest 7-4, despite a three-point night from Pano Fimis.
The final game of the season at Owen Sound closes out the weekend for Erie, as they close out the opening week of December on Sunday afternoon. The Otters will return home and prepare for a daytrip to St. Catharine's against the Niagara IceDogs, before returning home for a Saturday night contest with the Guelph Storm for Native Heritage Night.
